New XPS 13 Ivy Bridge w Ubuntu 12.04 - no stable wireless

Hello,

I just received a brand new XPS 13 with Ivy Bridge chipset. I directly installed the 12.04 version on it and went to work... for about 3 minutes and then, the wifi dropped. I had to reboot to bring it back and it fails after few minutes... all the time.

I tried adding the sputnik ppa and update as well as many other workaround found on the various ubuntu forums. No can do and right now, I am quite frustrated.

My plan for tomorrow is to upgrade to 12.10 with the 3.5+ kernel. I have not found any post about this particular problem on this version. The problem seems to originate from the Centrino Advanced N 6235 network card driver which might have been updated in 12.10.

What is exactly going on with this problem?? Is there a new driver or a fixed driver in the pipeline? Have you heard about problems with 12.10?

Thanks for your support,

Jacques

A Dell technician just replaced the Atheros card with the Intel 6235, no disconnections for now (about 30 minutes), let's hope for the best...

That's what I read here as well...

frapontillo, thanks for the suggestion, but mine shipped with the Intel card. I've tried two of each type now.

So your model is a LX321... Why don't you ask for a whole replace with a LX322?

That's next on the list to try. I had been avoiding it because I figured, after four cards and two motherboards, I'll have the same problems with a new machine... but I forgot that there's a whole new version out there. Doh.

However, I'm curious to see if you have continued better luck with the Intel card in the LX322 before I go through the hassle. Do you mind posting here in a couple days with how it's been going?

Let's try to tackle this issue once and for all. My XPS 13 is a LX322, NOT the LX321. From my understanding, the LX321 was shipped with the Intel 6235 and maybe some different configuration that caused some trouble. The LX322 was shipped with the Atheros, and there is a lower number of LX322 around; maybe that's why everyone is complaining about the Intel card.

@veryno, have you tried asking Pro Support for an Intel card? I'd do that.

OK that's weird, most people's issues have been with the 6235 / iwlwifi...

I think it might seem like more problems are on the Intel card because the machines originally shipped with that one, so more people have it.

I have gone through two Atheros cards and I'm still seeing the same issues, on multiple APs :( Which is weird, because they're completely different drivers.

No problem at all, I will surely do that. My return period expires in a week or so, I'll remember to let you know. You can add me on Twitter too (@frapontillo).

Not true I'm afraid. I have the L322X and it came with the 6235. I have manually replaced it with an Atheros based card.

I've got L322X with AR9462, had heaps of issues with wifi staying connected (to multiple different APs), I disabled wifi power management (using ubuntu 13.04), seems to have made a big diff.

Here's info that I followed: flukylogs.blogspot.com.au/.../wireless-power-management-in-ubuntu.html

frapontillo: Creat! So you have L322X. And now Atheros wireless card AR9462 is replaced with Intel 6235. Ubuntu 12.04 and WLAN connection works like it expected? Maybe I should also change WLAN card...

Be sure to stress test it, I had much fewer disconnections with wicd, but they were still there,

Using wicd instead of NetworkManager seems to solve the problem for me.
