Update on XPS 13/15 2016 Developer Edition availability

Any news on the availability for any of the new XPS machines in a Developer Edition?

And do you know exactly what specifications will be used? I.e. 13? 15? Ram/screen/etc.?

Thanks, Phil.

This keeps getting asked. No, there will not be, but there will be of the Precision 5510 soon: www.dell.com/us/business/p/precision-m5510-workstation/pd?oc=xctop551015us

2) I've seen many reviews where developers were complaining about the keybord. Has something been done to improve the handling of the keys? This is really important as I'm buying it to do a lot of coding on the go

The BIOS fixes for the repeat key issues some customers have reported in the Broadwell version of the XPS 13 have been published for a while now and should be in the Skylake version as well. (Actually, my understanding is that the fixes have been made across Dell's business client laptops.)

3) Can we please get normal arrow keys on this next version? Those small up/down arrow keys are just horrible. It's so hard to use them and makes coding a real ***. After all, we jump a lot from line to line in code.

I don't understand non-vi/vim users. ;) (Kidding... I'm not the one that makes this sort of hardware decision.)

@DELL-JARED - Are you saying that the XPS 15 cannot be configured with 16GB and i7 in FHD ?

I was browsing the online store, and the model I was looking at appears to have those specs so I'm a bit confused?

Here is the model I'm speaking of : http://www.dell.com/us/p/xps-15-9550-laptop/pd?oc=dncwx1630s&model_id=xps-15-9550-laptop

Hi Jared,

Do you know what will be the differences between the regular precision 5510 and the dev edition ? (price? specs?, something else?)

Since the precision 5510 is already available with the config I want (FHD, Xeon processor, 32Gb ram, M2 ssd and extended battery) and Ubuntu, I don't know if I should wait for DE or not (I'm in no rush to buy my new laptop, but I'd like to know if it's worth the wait or not)

Thanks,

Romain

I've not kept close track of the configurations for the XPS 15, but I'm not talking about it except to say that it will NOT be available with Ubuntu. The XPS 13 and the full Precision mobile line WILL. That means that the XPS 15's sibling, the Precision 5510, will be available with Ubuntu.

It's the XPS 13 that cannot be configured with both 16GB of RAM and a FHD display.

Ah I see.   So the only 15 in laptop available with Ubuntu in the forseeable future will be the Precision 5510.  Thanks for clarifying.

Thanks for clearing that up.  It looks like a great machine!

I believe rcatajar was asking for difference between a Precision 5510 with Ubuntu and the Precision 5510 Developer Edition with Ubuntu.  Are there actually two 5510 versions with Ubuntu?

They are one and the same.

Price, Ubuntu 14.04, Type C driver functionality, official support (via ProSupport).

I'm seeing it orderable now! There's a problem with the configuration page, but you can order it with Ubuntu offline.

The Precision 7510 and 7710 are orderable too now, including online.

@DELL-JARED while i'm eager to see the 2016-DE-XPS13 devices being available for order it just broke my heart that there won't be a 16gb + fhd combinatiion (i5 would do for me).

non-glare display is mandatory for me and with this size i really don't care about touch/4k as i want to work with that fine piece of hardware so it looks like i have to live with non-upgradeable 8gb...

greenchile:

(First, being Mexican American and having grown up in El Paso, Texas, I love the name!)

If we could offer the XPS 13 with FHD display and 16GB, I would push for it, but unfortunately it's much harder to push for than something like changing out the wireless card (which is hard enough). For what it's worth, if glare is the only issue for you (though personally I don't find it significantly worse than with matte displays), anti-glare shields are available for sale.

Reading through these points, could someone tell me if what I am gleaning is correct?

The 2016 XPS 13 Developer Edition will still come with 8 GB of memory (no option for 16 GB).  In addition, it will come preloaded with Ubuntu 14.04?

I am weighing the $100 coupon for the 2015 model vs. waiting for the 2016.

TIA
