Freezing boot - Ubuntu 20.04 - Dell G3 3590

I have tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell G3 (3590) but it freezes before I can type my user and password.

However, it works if I use "nomodeset" on grub before boot. I have tried to install oficial Nvidia drivers (440 and 395) but it doesn't work.

Is someone else having the same problem?

rclacerda,

From where are you downloading and installing Ubuntu 20.04?

Hello,

I've downloaded from Ubuntu oficial site. I've also tried to install pop_os 20.04 but it didn't work too.

The only distro that works well is Fedora 32 but I prefer a debian based one.

Thanks

Have you checked the Ubuntu forums for any input on their end? If there's a particular bug with the 20.04?

I've done a research and I've found some posts about Nvidia drivers and If I use "nomodeset" on grub it works.

I didn't found specific problems on Ubuntu 20.04 and I have it installed and working well on another laptop.

I also have tried another Nvidia drivers without success.

Thanks.

You mentioned yesterday that it was working fine with Fedora 32. Right?
So it could well be an issue with the Debian-base. We don't have much to offer in terms of insight on Ubuntu. But we need to corroborate that the Hardware pieces are working.

Hi,

I have the same issue. Boot process freezes without nomodeset kernel cmdline option. I also have the NVIDIA driver 440 installed.

In this mode, HDMI cannot be used and sound does not work. The latter issue is common to the one described here:

It's not a hardware problem because it works well on Fedora 32 and Windows 10.

But it doesn't work only on Debian based distros.

I still trying to solve it.

Thanks

Hi,

The problem is exactly the same here.

Do you have good news about it?

Thanks

That said, if you want to take advantage of all the hardware of your Dell G3 3590 laptop while using Ubuntu, you can go back to the 18.04 version. After fixing a sound issue by hand, it seems to work just fine so far.

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-oem-osp1/+bug/1868105 (Acelan KAo's workaround)

BTW, even with Ubuntu 18.04, it was not straight forward because grub of 18.04.4 live usb image failed to display the menu entries. In my case, I had to go back to the version 18.04.2 that I found here:

http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/bionic/

Once the version 18.04.2 installed and the system updated to the 18.04.4, everything still works fine. The kernel version I run is the 5.3 (it seems that there is no need to use the kernel linux-oem-osp1 which is stuck to the version 5.0).

Hi rclacerda,

I did several tests with different configurations.

So, I confirm having boot issues with Ubuntu 20.04 (even directly with the live usb image). The system freezes before reaching the desktop. I tried the official live usb image released at the end of april 2020.

I tried the daily build images of focal (20.04) and groovy (20.10) versions, same issue.

And I also tried with the kernel 5.6 (linux-oem-5.6) and the latest kernel 5.7.7, same issue.

I did not find any other way than passing nomodeset to the kernel to boot Ubuntu successfully. Within the live usb images, the grub menu entry safe graphics passes the nomodeset parameter to the kernel and boots successfully.

I regret I'll not use the new gnome 3.36.

Anyways, thanks for your reply. I'm gonna install 18.04.2.

There is a point release 20.04.1 at the end of the month.

It might be worth a try when it will be available.

I'm using the DELL INSPIRION 15 7000 and have the same problem. I noted that happens after some installs.

My drive where I have the root partition is unable to write and when I reboot, I have the freeze. That happening in all Ubuntu based distros for me.

In major times, I need repair the file system to go on with regular boot
