Freezing boot - Ubuntu 20.04 - Dell G3 3590
I have tried to install Ubuntu 20.04 on my Dell G3 (3590) but it freezes before I can type my user and password.
However, it works if I use "nomodeset" on grub before boot. I have tried to install oficial Nvidia drivers (440 and 395) but it doesn't work.
Is someone else having the same problem?

Hi, Ubuntu 20.04.1 still freezing.
With any Ubuntu flavor the same problem happens.
Very sad :(.

I give it a try too...
And the situation is even worse... after an upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04.1, Ubuntu was unable to start even with the nomodeset kernel parameter.
Hopefully, I had done a backup image of my installation before upgrade with the Gnome Disk application from a live usb key. And hopefully, the backup/restore feature works like a charm.
That's the first time that I see a computer bricked after an Ubuntu LTS upgrade. Bad point for the quality of this release...

Hello,
the solution on this thread works for me.
https://www.dell.com/community/Linux-General/Ubuntu-20-04-on-Dell-G3-15-3590-Only-booting-with-nomodeset/m-p/7636051#M17364
"Instead of "nomodeset" you can use "snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0" to make sound work but microphone won't work."
Like his said, only mic not fine, but using headphones/headset for me it's ok.
Now using Ubuntu 20.04.1.

Ok I'll give it a try.
I was focused on graphic card and its drivers, I was thinking that nomodeset was related to them.

Thank you so much Daniel for this tip!
I managed to start a 20.04.1 live usb successfully with the parameter related to the microphone.
This workaround is totally acceptable to me, when I need to call someone I use a headset, so I'll attempt an upgrade from 18.04 to 20.04.1 next week.

I have the same problem on my Dell G3 3590.
Not sure what I can try. Bought this notebook with ubuntu preinstalled, because I thought it would be compatible or at least usable.
If there are software bugs, is dell doing something to fix this issue on debian? @DELL-Cares
Was very happy to see a ubuntu version on the dell notebooks. The proprietary operating system win* is no option for my usage!
Please ensure better support on Dell computers!

For Ubuntu 20.04, an effective workaround is explained here (it worked some weeks ago for me) :

For Ubuntu 18.04, it should just work.

I'm having a similar issue trying to boot Ubuntu 20.04.2.0 on a new Dell G15 5515. It's very disappointing that this doesn't work - can I get arouund it by using a different distro?

Which kernel do you run? It looks like your laptop is actually certified for Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with the 5.6.0-1036-oem kernel, so I'd ping support first to resolve any problems you might have. After all, even running a certified OS, you may encounter some hiccups. In my case, the system used to freeze when an external monitor was attached via the DisplayPort connector.
If you want to try a different distro, try something non-Ubuntu, like Fedora and Manjaro — I had no problem with these on my G3 3590, and the former became my daily driver.
