Linux on Optiplex GX280

Does anyone know of any issues using one of the new Optiplex GX280's as a Linux Workstation? Is support for all the new tech & devices this new series contains supported by the latest kernel?

For a GX280 with Dual DVI support, what solution is provided? Is it an Nvidia GeForceFX like the GX270's?

On a related note - I've read in the past rumours that Dell would bundle FreeDOS instead of Win XP upon request. Is this still supported? Our local Dell sales-person doesn't seem to know about it. (It just seems a waste to pay for an XP license that'll never be used at all...)

Thanks...

I'm curious too... Specifically driver support w/ Fedora Core 2.

I belive the new Intel graphics chipset handles two monitors. Check this out.

Google for 'optiplex gx280n'. Unfortunately, the 'n' models w/ FreeDOS usually cost more than the Windows models because they don't qualify for the various sale prices, free shipping, etc.

After quite a bit of Toing & Froing with our Dell sales rep, Dell are now recommending that for a "Linux Workstation", I should look at the Precision line. They are a bit more expensive, but the specs are better than the Opteron. They also have better support from Dell for Linux. Albeit Red-Hat, but at least that's more of an assurance that drivers will support the hardware for other Linux flavours.

And the Dual-Head video is the Nvidia Quadro series - which do look much better - and full Linux driver support too.

See this thread for more info:

(Short answer is "no, you'll need to do some tweaking to get everything working.")

I believe that dual-head support is provided by the i915 (i810) driver, but I don't remember where I saw configuration details. You might try looking at the i810 information on http://dri.sf.net
