Resolution issues with Dell 2001FP LCD

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 with a GeForce 8400 GS graphics card. I am using the proprietary Nvidia driver and still cannot attain the monitor's optimal 1600x1200 resolution. Does anyone have a solution? I recall blindly editing my xorg.conf about a year ago with little results. Has anyone else faced this situation?

Have you tried using xandr?

Here is a link to a site that explains how to use it to add display modes to your monitor.

www.ubuntugeek.com/how-change-display-resolution-settings-using-xrandr.html

Might also help to see if the monitor type is detected properly. might be setting it as some random generic monitor without the features that your monitor has.
