XPS 13 9300 Intel Core i7 - 4K Video Stutter

Hi everyone,

I know for certain that there is a video driver issue with Ubuntu 20.04 when it come to playing 4K video on YouTube using either Google Chrome or Mozilla FireFox. The video plays fine at 1440p60 but not at 2160p60. I have an auxiliary Surface Pro 7 that uses the same CPU, the Intel Core i7 1065G7 and it plays 4K videos with ease. I hope that the video drivers for Ubuntu 20.04.1 is updated or at least update when Ubuntu 20.04.2 is released.

Thanks!

It's already in the repo, just run this command:

sudo apt-get install intel-media-va-driver-non-free

I'm still learning my way around ubuntu and the way things are packaged, but have you tried switching from intel-media-va-driver to intel-media-va-driver-non-free, just as an experiment?

I actually haven't tried switching intel-media-va-drivers from the free and non-free one. Is the driver available on Github? Can you supply the code to input in terminal?

Thanks!

The Intel video drivers do help a bit; however, there is still stuttering when playing YouTube 4K videos. Hovering or moving the mouse over the video causes the YouTube 4K video to pause which is strange. Perhaps the CPU is not utilizing the processing power enough or is getting too hot?

After installing the package, I was able to play a test 4k HEVC recording from GoPro without stutter (VLC). Thank you!
