linux on vostro 200
hallo,
the problem is to install a linux system parallel with an installed wind.vista system.
It is not possible to start the linux (debian or ubuntu) installation by a boot-cd/dvd and not at all to boot a linux-live-cd.
The hardware-info:
E6550 Core 2 Duo Prozessor 2.3 Ghz
320 GB Serial ATA-Festplatte
Optiarc DVD-Laufwerk 5170SATA
I think that there is a problem with the Dell-Bios-Settings, the SATA-Drives or...
don't know!
Perhaps You have some advices !?
thank You
Ernesto

I have Inspiron 1520 and had problem to istall Archlinux but not boot from install CD/DVD.
It could be a problems of your new HDD and DVD and to start up you must enter special booting command (not sure about Debian and Ubuntu real command you need).

Hi I read that problem could be also the media card reader.
If you disconect it, it works.
Also change the mode from IDE to RAID could works also.

I too had to set the HDD interface in the BIOS from IDE to RAID in order to be able to boot from varous Linux CDs (Mandriva, PartEd Magic, ...).
However, with the Vostro BIOS v1.0.15 (15th July 2008) things improved.
