Dell 2209WA monitor not displaying other resolutions correctly

Whenever I change the resolution to another 16:10 resolution other than 1680x1050, the aspect ratio is incorrect.  For example, when I set the resolution to 1280x800, the screen is squished horizontally with black bars on top and bottom.

Another thing I notice, when I bring up the monitor menu when in 1280x800, the monitor tells me that I'm in 1280x1024... NOT 1280x800!  What is up with that??

I have a Dell 2209WA attached to a Dell XPS 16 with an ATI 5730 via HDMI-->DVI cable.

Driver info: Driver Packaging Version 8.782-100930m-106237C-ATI, Catalyst™ Version 10.10.

Thanks for reading!

Finally figured out a workaround. In the ATI Catalyst Control Center, My Digital Flat-Panels>Properties (Digital Flat-Panel)>Image Scaling>Enable GPU Scaling. Current output is Mini-displayport to DVI adapter>2209WA.

Does the laptop video even support 16:10 or does it support 16:9?

I'm not sure what you mean by that. It is able to output 1680x1050 on the desktop just fine, but it's having trouble with showing 1280x800 in games and the desktop. does what i described above.

Does the laptop have other video ports to test on the monitor?
