New monitor stopped working after installing driver

We purchased three U2412M monitors and one of them is not working (they are all on different computers). When I first hooked up the monitor the display worked but the aspect ratio was off so everything was stretched and I decided to install the driver that came with the monitor. After installing the driver the monitor won't show anything but a few vertical lines and basically seems like it is asleep. I've tried uninstalling the drivers, restoring the computer to a previous date, trying the monitor on a different computer and nothing has worked. We are running Windows XP on all 3 computers, and the driver as it turns out is compatible with Vista and Windows 7 only. The other 2 monitors are working fine. No idea what to do now to get it to work properly or at all.

Could this have something to do with Powernap? That being what was installed with the driver coupled by the fact that it is supposed to make your computer go into sleep mode?

Hi slynch821,

To understand the issue better please answer the below question:

  • Is the power button of the monitor ON, if Yes what is the color of the power button?
  • I understand that vertical lines are displayed on the screen, what is the color of vertical lines?
  • What is the input source (VGA, DVI, HDMI, Display, and Component)?

The Dell U2412M monitor has a built-in diagnostic tool that allows you to determine whether the screen abnormality is due to an inherent problem in your monitor, or due to a problem in the computer and video card.

The following are the steps for running the built-in diagnostics tool:

  1. Ensure that the screen is clean—the screen surface should be free from dust particles.
  2. Unplug the video cable(s) from the rear side of the computer or monitor. The monitor, then, goes into the self-test mode.
  3. Press and hold the 1st and 4th buttons on the front panel, simultaneously, for 2 seconds. A gray screen appears.
  4. Carefully check the screen for abnormalities.
  5. Press the 4th button on the front panel, again. The color of the screen changes to red.
  6. Check the display for any abnormalities.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the green, blue, and white colors on the screen.

The test is complete when the white screen appears. You can close the built-in diagnostic tool by pressing the 4th button, again. If you do not detect any screen abnormalities by using the built-in diagnostic tool, check the video card and the computer by connecting a different monitor to the same system.

Please try the above steps and reply.

Hi,

Try these steps it should help in this situation.

  • Increase brightness & contrast controls via On Screen Display menu.
  • Check for bent or broken pins in the video cable connector.
  • Run the Self-test in the monitor.

The following are the steps for running the self-test feature:

  1. Turn off both the computer and the monitor.
  2. Unplug the video cable from the back of the computer.
  3. Power on the monitor, check for the message on the screen if it is asking to plug in the input cable.
  4. Power off your monitor and reconnect the video cable; then, power on both your computer and the monitor.

Please try the above steps and reply

None of that worked, the screen just stayed black with one line.

Yes, the power button is on. It is blue.

The colors vary but are generally kind of whiteish or light colors, not like a bright red or anything.

The input is VGA

slynch821,

* Turn the monitor off
* Disconnect every cable from the monitor side and bottom (USB, VGA, DVI, DisplayPort, Power)
* Press and hold in the monitor power button for 10 seconds. Release the button
* Reconnect only the monitor power cord to the monitor and the wall jack
* Turn the monitor on
* You should see this

There is no on screen display menu. I did all the above mentioned steps and didn't get any message saying i didn't have the input cable plugged in, nothing shows up on screen besides lines.
