P2415Q connecting to XPS 15-9560 via HDMI, lag issues

I've purchased a P2415Q monitor to connect to my XPS 15-9560 when I use it in the office, in order to continue using the UHD display feature, but I'm having some minor lag issues. What cables/ports/connections should I be using to connect the laptop to the monitor to eliminate the lag issues?

How are you currently connecting the two? Using what cables and what ports?

Lag in what specific applications?

Is it lagging when just using the windows desktop, moving the mouse around, opening boxes, etc. ?

In the XPS 15-9560 display settings, what resolution is the P2415Q?

When both are on, press the P2415Q Menu button. What is the resolution listed on the bottom left?

Hi Chris, thanks for your response. The lag is with the mouse movements, scrolling etc. I am currently using a 4k HDMI cable to connect the laptop to the monitor.

The resolution of the monitor when I select the Menu button is 3840 x 2160 at 30Hz and this is the same resolution in the laptop's display settings.

Is there a more appropriate cable to be using or should I be using something like a D3100 docking station?

Using 30Hz rather than 60Hz is the problem causing the lag. So the P2415Q is currently using HDMI 1.1. If your P2415Q is revision A03 or higher (check the label), you can change it to HDMI 2.0 3840x2160 at 60Hz. Read this =

Setting up P2415Q & P2715Q Monitors with HDMI 2.0 support 4K x 2K 60Hz

If your monitor is revision A00/A01/A02, you will need to connect using DP or mDP.

Hi Chris, further to this issue I've noticed the fan on the XPS15-9560 tends to work harder and make a grinding sound when plugged into the monitor. Is there a solution for this - potentially using a docking station etc?

Possibly, but you should ask the Laptop users on the Laptop board if they have seen the issue and if a dock corrected it.

Sorry to resurrect this thread. I also have a Dell XPS 9560 connected via DP/USB-C with severe delay when typing etc. I’ve tried this with HDMI and now DP/USB-C with the same result. I assumed this was due to issues with the 9560 and over time have changed the memory, SSD & recently the WiFi card. However, out of frustration I changed over to my newer XPS 9370 last week and am seeing exactly the same thing!

I’m wondering now if it’s been the monitor all along…? It does seem a lot worse if waking from standby. Just writing this I have had a spinning cog (or whatever it is now) about five times, delaying typing by around 5 sec each time….

I will pick up a different monitor to try this week, so will report back if it’s the monitor or not. I just looked around the back and it’s a Rev 1, which I believe was problematic for a whole host of reasons… Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
