U2414H, XPS 8700, Confusion

Jump to solution

Hello,

Could Chris or any other expert on this help me please?

I received my dell xps 8700 and u2414h monitor a few days back but still have not been able to use them yet due to connectivity issues. Very frustrating!

I spent a good hour on the phone to dell support today, but they did not seem to grasp the problem.

The pc came shipped off the shelf with this graphics card:

NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 750TI 2GB DDR5

Am I correct in thinking this means I can only use the connection ports on the actual video card, and not the DP/HDMI ports on the pc itself? i.e the DP to mini DP cable supplied is of no use. (if so, this is basic instruction which should surely accompany the pc and monitor!)

The support centre said they would send me an hdmi converter whatever that is, but then called me back a few hours later to say that they were not able to send me one of these, but could send me a vga / dvi adaptor. I am not sure what I would connect this to?

The video card appears to have two dvi type connectors and a micro HDMI.

The solution mentioned by other users seems to be to connect hdmi to hdmi (or micro hdmi in my case), but I have read elsewhere that hdmi connections can cause other monitor problems here including colour issues.

Can anyone give me a definitive answer on which connectors to use, and if I am likely to have any subsequent issues with colours etc. (I will be doing graphics work, so colours are very important to me)

Many thanks in advance for any help anyone is able to offer.

Kind regards

Nick

The cabling that ships in the monitor box has nothing to do with the computer you order. They come from different locations. They are not tied together in any way.

The U2414H from the factory ships with the following cables =
Power cable
JHF6D mDP to DP cable
P57VD USB 3.0 cable

The U2414H has the following in ports =
DP
mDP
HDMI
HDMI

The sales page Tech Specs tab clearly shows this.

The XPS 8700 Nvidia GeForce GTX750Ti video card has the following out ports =
DVI-I
DVI-D
mini HDMI

* Go to the Sales page
* Find the Video Card section
* Click "Help Me Choose"
* Click "Compare video cards"
* Scroll down to Maximum Resolution
* From there you could have checked all of the video cards and chosen one with DP out

Because a discrete video card was added to the XPS 8700, you cannot use any of the higher onboard XPS 8700 ports. You must use the ports on the discrete video card. So in your case, you need to purchase either:

mini HDMI to HDMI cable

DVI to HDMI cable

If you really want video card DP to monitor mDP, you need to return the 8MXMJ Nvidia GeForce GTX750Ti video card for credit and purchase one of these XPS 8700 video cards that have DP out =
TC2P0 Nvidia GeForce GTX745 M302N, 4GB, DVI-I/DP/HDMI
FPDH3 Nvidia GeForce GTX660 D15P2-40 V2, 1.5GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/DP/HDMI
9168H Nvidia GeForce GTX645
9KYFK AMD Radeon R9 270 RD14D-P1-70, 2GB, DVI-I/DVI-D/DP/HDMI
WNMHJ AMD Radeon HD8870, 2GB, DVI-I/mDP/mDP/HDMI

RE: U2414H, XPS 8700, Confusion

Dear Chris,

Many thanks for providing such a comprehensive response to my question.

To be perfectly honest, I am not technically minded enough to have had the foresight to check which ports the pc/video card/monitor did or did not have. Even if I had checked I would probably have assumed that the pc's native DP port would have worked.

I would venture that I am not alone in not scrutinising such details prior to buying an 'off the shelf' computer.

I (naively as it turned out) just assumed that if I bought an 'off the shelf' dell pc and an up to date dell monitor that it would be straightforward to connect them.

I have now ordered a mini hdmi to hdmi cable so hopefully that will work.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to get back to me.

Kind regards

Nick

I agree, the website should have some means to let the consumer know if they have a video card/monitor port issue. I have escalated the sales site issue.

Chris:

First let me say that the pages that I ordered my XPS 8700 from were not explicit enough where I could have observed what outputs were available on the video card.

Anyway given your answer it cleared up a lot of confusion on this issue.  However, can you provide me with additional information regarding the video cards you recommended that included the DP outputs.  Which are equivalent or better than the one that came with my PC (NVIDIA GeForce GTXC 750Ti 2GB DDR5.  Second is that I am currently connected to the HDMI port on the NVIDIA card.  What difference will I see in video quality/performance by going to a DP port?  In other words is it worth changing my video cards?  Third, is IF I choose to upgrade to an NVIDIA video card that includes a DP port do I need any additional adapters over and above what was sent to me?  Finally, who do I contact to start this replacement process?  Bob

However, can you provide me with additional information regarding the video cards you recommended that included the DP outputs. Which are equivalent or better than the one that came with my PC NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750Ti 2GB DDR5.

* Your video card is the best Nvidia we offer. You would have to move up to the Radeon R9 270 to get DP/HDMI at 4096x2160
* Go here
* Scroll down to "Maximum Resolution"
* Based on the chart, these are the specifications for your GeForce GTX 750Ti =
2GB GDDR5, 1020Mhz GPU speed, 2700Mhz memory speed, Memory Data Width 128bit, PCIe x16 3.0, mHDMI 1920x1080/DVI 2560x1600
* Now compare the video cards that have DP or mDP and their resolutions to your video card

Second is that I am currently connected to the HDMI port on the NVIDIA card. What difference will I see in video quality/performance by going to a DP port? In other words is it worth changing my video cards?

* You could see a higher resolution. To me, no. I play all my games at 1920x1080. So moving to a different video card would not be worth it to me. I would rather be at 1920x1080 with all game settings on maximum than a higher resolution using less than maximum game settings.

Third, is IF I choose to upgrade to an NVIDIA video card that includes a DP port do I need any additional adapters over and above what was sent to me?

* We do not offer a better Nvidia card, so you would have to buy from a retail store. Assuming you bought the U2414H, it came with a mDP to DP cable.

Finally, who do I contact to start this replacement process? Bob

* Not us. We do not have an "upgrade" program.
