U2415, computer HDMI to mDP cable not working?

HDMI out of computer
mdp into monitor
I just got this monitor and am trying to install it. My laptop has no dp/mdp port so I got a HDMI to mdp cable but no communication to monitor. Do I have to use HDMI toHDMI cable? Have done hard boot etc. Sorry for such a basic question. Thanks in advance.

A computer HDMI out port cannot upconvert to a monitor DP/mDP in port via a straight cable. What you bought is designed to do the opposite =
computer DP/mDP out port to monitor HDMI in port
You should connect in this way =
computer HDMI out port --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> U2415 HDMI in port
