U2518D, screen tearing, PS4

Hello,

I bought two of the U2518D's. Both have the same issue. When I plug my PS4 in via HDMI, and I run the resolution at 1080p, I get screen tears across the screen (horizontally) that move vertically from about halfway up the screen to the top. Exactly the same issue that other user's are reporting are happening to me as well. It makes gaming very annoying, it happens in 30 second intervals. So gaming, which is what I plan to do with this monitor half the time, will be very cumbersome. Please see video here.

This issue can be resolved by switching the output of the PS4 to 720p, which is 50% of 1440p. Then there is no screen tears. However, the quality is much lower, so I would like to go back to 1080p again. This fixes issues on both monitors.

I do not have a gaming PC (yet) powerful enough to run 1440p at 60FPS to match the resolution and refresh rate of this monitor. I will be building a PC soon, and I need some good monitors, however, I plan to return both of these monitors if I cannot get this resolved, because I really need these monitors to be solid at 1440p, 60FPS and at 1080p resolutions.

Please note, both monitors have the latest firmware update. I have tried multiple settings within the OSD of the display, and I cannot fix this issue.

* What are the non-private S/N and A0x of both U2518D?
* After you do the instructions below, you need to post a video showing your U2518D's and the PS4 issue
* The PS4 needs to be checked to be sure it has all of its updates
* You should also post the issue on the PS4 Forum
* What specific HDMI to HDMI cable are you using?

* Open the U2518D OSD Menu
* Go to Others- Factory Reset. Reset to Factory
* Go back to Display. Verify these are the settings you are using:
Aspect Ratio = Wide 16:9
Sharpness = 50
Response Time = Normal
MST = Off
Smart HDR = Off
* Exit the U2518D OSD Menu
* Retest

Both screen have been set to factory default settings and both have the same issue.

HDMI Chord: Phillips

Chris, I have seen you have dealt with this issue with multiple people in the past. I have read every forum post about this issue, start to finish, with this particular model and I have not been able to find a fix. I actually really love these monitors for daily production, but I really, really want to be able to game on these as well as I will be doing that half the time.

So far, the only solution I have found is switching to another model. It appears the U2717D does not have this issue according to other users.

Service Tag Number: <private service tag removed>

Checked PS4 forums and no solution.

This issue has been reported on numerous occasions on this forum and no solution has been found. It appears to be an issue with the U2518D. Other users have reported that the U2717D and the U2515H do not have this issue. I don't think this issue can be resolved by an exchange for another U2518D. The issue persists on both of my U2518D's. I have tried setting my monitors to HDMI 2.0 and 1.4, with and without HDR enabled, and the issue continues to persist.

See video. Skip to 0:25 to see the screen tear that occurs roughly every 30 seconds - 1 minute.

Clarification, are you using the older 2013 PS4/PS4 Slim or the 2016 PS4 Pro?

The U2717D is a different panel manufacturer and panel. You should not use it as a comparison. The older U2515H used the same panel manufacturer, but different panel.

Comparisons

U2515H, $499.99, AH-IPS LG (LM250WQ1-SSA1)
U2518D, $499.99, AH-IPS LG (LM250WQ3-SSA1)
U2717D, $719.99, Samsung PLS (LTM270DL11)

Did you test all of these?

HDMI 2.0, Smart HDR On, Response Time Fast
HDMI 2.0, Smart HDR Off, Response Time Fast
HDMI 2.0, Smart HDR On, Response Time Normal
HDMI 2.0, Smart HDR Off, Response Time Normal
HDMI 1.4, Smart HDR On, Response Time Fast
HDMI 1.4, Smart HDR Off, Response Time Fast
HDMI 1.4, Smart HDR On, Response Time Normal
HDMI 1.4, Smart HDR Off, Response Time Normal

I have a 2014 PS4. It is not a slim or a Pro.

I have tried all of those settings and none of them amend the issue unfortunately.

I had a Dell S2418HN, before, and I did not have this issue using the same PS4 and the same HDMI cords.

S2418HN IPS panel, HDMI 2.0, 1920x1080, 8 bits (6 bits + FRC) panel depth
U2518D AH-IPS LG (LM250WQ3-SSA1) panel, HDMI 2.0, 2560x1440, 8 bits panel depth

It is odd that searching for U2518D on the PS4 forum shows zero results. Does this mean that no PS4 users are buying the U2518D? Or just not posting their issue? Don't know. I found one result on Reddit.

If purchased directly from Dell, you have 30 days from the Dell invoice date to request a refund. After 30 days, you may only get a refurbished exchange.

I’m not sure what to do. I really like these monitors but it seems like a lot of other people are having issues gaming on it.

Note that in the reddit post you linked, the user is describing the same exact issue I’m having. It’s like a really weird “wave” that washes over the screen.

He also said he used to have a U2515H that didn’t have this issue, and when he had his U2515H replaced with a U2518D, he all of a sudden started having problems.

It appears this is an issue unique to this particular monitor, which is unfortunate because it is the exact specs I was looking for. I also prefer Dell’s build quality and style over the competition.

Let me know if there is anything else you can think of. Maybe this can be fixed with a firmware update from your team? It seems like a lot of users have been eyeing this monitor, but have been turned off due to the reports of its issues with gaming.

Hello,

I have your same problem with PS4 on 1080p, as many others people.

On my old u2515h I had no problems.

Unfortunately last firmware update was on Jan 2018....I dont think that will be a next update

Nothing I have done has been able to fix this issue.

Do you do any PC gaming with this monitor at 1080p or 1440p? If so, does the same, weird screen tearing occur when gaming on PC?

I bought these monitors to game on PC, not necessarily to game with my PS4. But I’m seeing reports that other users are also having issues when gaming with these monitors on PC. I’m not confident in the gaming performance on PC considering there is already issues present with the PS4 gaming experience

Please let me know.
