U2711 Aspect ratio issue

I bought the Dell U2711 a couple of months ago and have noticed a major problem with the resolution scaling. Normally I run games onto my TV or run them the full resolution on the monitor, but some games do not support the full resolution, and others tax my system so I need to run them at a lower resolution. This is where I found the problem.

Any game, or even just setting the resolution manually to 1920x1080 gives either black borders on the top and bottom of the screen, or with other stretch modes gives black borders on all 4 sides. This should not be. This resolution is 16:9, the same as the monitor. The monitor reports that it is actually in 1920x1200, not 1920x1080 that the videocard is sending it. 1080p is THE industry standard HD resolution, this should be well supported.

I spent a lot of money on this monitor, a lot more than I normally would. It was a christmas present for myself and I did a lot of research on what monitors are very good. This is far from good. I am VERY disappointed that such a basic scaling issue is present on such a high end monitor. And my monitor is revision 09! You've had 9 different versions of this monitor and this has not be fixed with a firmware update? From Googling the problem I found many people complaining about this with no answers:

This happens on both windows 7 and windows 8

I am using a DVI connection.

Videocard is a Radeon HD7970

What can be done about this? I want this fixed or a new monitor. I am even willing to spend the difference and upgrade to a newer/better/bigger monitor if they do not have this problem.

Please help.

Re: U2711 Aspect ratio issue

evil-doer,

If the monitor OSD (On Screen Display) states at the bottom Resolution:1920x1200 @ 60Hz, then that is what the video card is actually sending. The monitor only responds to the commands from the video card, not the other way around.

Is the OSD Display Settings- Wide Mode set to Fill?

To get a true 1920x1080p you should be using HDMI to HDMI. Have you tested this?

absolutely wrong. ive tested it on not only two video cards, ive tested it on two totally separate computers. and not only does this affect 1920x1080. i also set 1280x720 and guess what the monitor reports? 1280x800.. and it has the same black bars.. did you even test this? are you assuming this is the case without doing any testing? did you read the other forum posts? yes what you are describing is how it SHOULD work, but it IS NOT.

its wrong in both FILL and ASPECT

1920x1080 should work perfectly fine over DVI, as should 1280x720 and every other 16:9 resolution. i really hope you arent expecting me to switch between dvi and hdmi whenever i run into a situation where i need to switch resolutions? let me also add, if the computer WERE really outputting 1920x1200. the black bars should be on THE SIDES, not the top and bottom. since 16:10 is taller than 16:9
