U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

I have several U2713HM monitors which I usually have connected to my desktop via a DisplayPort. I purchased a Dell D3100 Hub so that I could connect some of these monitors to my laptop.  If I connect a monitor to the Hub via the Hub's single DisplayPort, it works as expected. However, if I try to connect to the Hub via a HDMI, it does not display the full resolution. I understand that this is expected since the Monitor only supports HDMI 1.3. However, I have purchased an Active Converter that is designed to convert the DisplayPort signal of the monitor into the appropriate HDMI signal. Using this converted, when I plug into the HDMI of the dock, my laptop will not detect the monitor. What am I missing?

RE: U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

You do not plug the DP end of the Active Converter into the monitor DP. You are using backwards. That converter is designed to go from the computer DP out and convert down to HDMI. From the sales site you linked =

Portable active adapter connects a DisplayPort (DP, DP++, DisplayPort++) equipped laptop or desktop to an HDTV, monitor, or projector with HDMI input;

Computer DP out --> Male DP Active Converter --> Active Converter HDMI out --> HDMI to HDMI cable --> Monitor HDMI in

So which adapters will work?

What about this one?

RE: U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

That converter is computer HDMI to monitor DP. It says it can "Support resolutions up to 4K". But, the D3100 HDMI outs max to 2048x1152 60Hz as the second and third monitors. So even if you connect an HDMI to HDMI cable to them, then to the HDMI to DP converter to DP in on the 2nd and third U2713HMs, the resolution will only be 2048x1152 60Hz. Regardless of the converter, any HDMI in usage on the U2713HM will only produce 1920x1080 60Hz.

RE: U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

Hi Chris,

The first three bullets of the description for that adapter are as follows:

  • Connect your HDMI enabled Ultrabook or laptop to a DP monitor using this compact, USB-powered adapter
  • Works with HDMI enabled computers with 4K such as the HP ChromeBook 14 and DisplayPort enabled monitors and projectors
  • Supports resolutions up to 4K

Reading between the lines, this description seems to indicates that this adapter is designed solely for the purpose of connecting a computer's HDMI output to a monitor's DisplayPort input.

Now, you said in your post that the D3100's HDMI's max out at 2048x1152.  Are you absolutely positive?  If so, the advertising on this product is deeply misleading.  The product page and reviews on Amazon definitely indicate that this dock can support three ultra HD displays.

* Right. That is what I said. "That converter is computer HDMI to monitor DP. It says it can "Support resolutions up to 4K".

Read this.

It can support three monitors =
Monitor 1 DP = 3840x2160 30Hz, 1920x1080 60Hz
Monitor 2 HDMI = 2048x1152 60Hz
Monitor 3 HDMI = 2048x1152 60Hz

If only two monitors are connected to the D3100 dock HDMI outs, then they would do 2560x1440 50Hz. But the monitor has to support it.

RE: U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

According to that, if I use the DisplayPort and one HDMI of the dock, it should support two U2713HM monitors at full resolution (2560 x 1440).

Is that correct?  So then I will be able to use the dock for at least two additional monitors?  Which adapter would work?

RE: U2713HM, Full resolution with active converter on HDMI

The U2713HM HDMI maximum is only 1920x1080 60Hz. There is not any device that can "upgrade"" the monitor HDMI design.

The U2713HM DVI-D DL can do 2560x1440 60Hz. So maybe if you got an HDMI to DVI-D DL cable.
D3100 HDMI out --> HDMI to DVI-D DL cable --> U2713HM DVI-D DL in
