U2717D, Optiplex 5040, setup
I am trying to connect a brand new U2717D to a relatively new Dell Optiplex 5040 SFF. The U2717D offers three choices (DP/mDP/HDMI-MHL) and an auto. But none are to USB port on computer. And the auto does not detect it.

Apologies for missing your post. Did you ever get this resolved?
USB is not video. To get video, you must connect to one of the U2717D video in ports (DP/mDP/HDMI-MHL).
Optiplex 5040 SFF DP out port --> U2717D DP to mDP cable --> U2717D mDP in port
To access the U2717D two bottom USB downstream ports, connect like this =
Optiplex 5040 SFF blue USB 3.0 port --> U2717D USB upstream cable --> U2717D USB upstream port
