U3415W with Alienware X51 R2
Will the U3415W perform adequately with the Alienware X51 R2. If this is a good match which of the two GPU cards below do you recommend for the U3415W keepong in mind that I am not concerned with gaming performance but do CAD, Photoshop and watch videos.
AMD Radeon™ R9 370 with 4GB GDDR5
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 960 with 2GB GDDR5

See the chart here. The R9 370 cannot do the required 3440x1440 60Hz. The GTX 960 can.

Thanks Chris. I did look at that chart but must have miss read it
2650x1600 DP for AMD vs. 4096 X 2160 X 24 bpp @ 60 single DP for NVIDIA.
Any short comings using the X51 R2 i7-4790 + NVIDIA connected to the U3415W monitor?

Also, is 2Gb of vRAM adequate for a 5 Megapixel monitor considering that it is 2½ times the resolution of 1080p? I know nothing about this but read in forums that more than 2Gb of vRAM is recommended when running the equivalent of more than two monitors.

It should be fine. I have not seen any specific issues with that video card. My wife uses the U3415W on an Optiplex 9010 using onboard GPU DP out 3440x1440 60Hz and does not have any issues.

Chris, yo have peaked my interest with the Optiplex 9010. I am in the process of replacing my present system and the U3415W has shipped out today.
Thought a compact desk top might be a good replacement for my 8 year old XPS 420. The OptiPlex 9020 Small Form Factor appears to have superseded your 9010 and is available with Intel® Core™ i7-4790 Processor (Quad Core, 8MB, 3.60GHz w/HD4600 Graphics and 16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Memory. Will the onboard HD4600 Graphics render 3D rotations smoothly in CAD and smooth video at 3440x1440?

Yes. The 9020 can use both of its onboard DisplayPorts in addition to the added discrete video card ports. But, the Optiplex 9020 has four chassis types. The first three are difficult to add hard drives, so go with the full size tower.
The power supply is only 290w, so you could not add a better retail video card. So not for gaming.

/still leaning toward the OptiPlex 9020 Small Form Factor since I'm not gaming:
Intel® Core™ i7-4790 Processor Quad Core, 8MB, 3.60GHz w/HD4600 Graphics
16GB (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Memory
2.5 inch 500GB Solid State Hybrid Drive
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
I think that should cover my use :emotion-42:.

Optiplex 9020 with HD4600 Integrated Graphics arrived yesterday and drives the U3415W @ 3440x1440 just fine for my needs which include 3D CAD and video. I do not game where I expect the Integrated Graphics would not keep up.

so the dvi is just mainly for backward compatibility? officially you guys won't recommend using dvi to achieve 3440x1440?
