Ultrasharp 2001FP - Power Save Mode - Permanent Sleep Mode
Dell Ultrasharp 2001FP remains in permanent sleep state in DVI mode. Works in analog, but with ghosting 4+/- layers deep.
Have 2 identical 2001FP monitors, and 2 identical Dimension XPS Gen2 computers.
Testing: moved problem monitor to other Dimension; problem remained with monitor. Moved good monitor to 1st Dimension; works fine in DVI. Returned problem monitor to 1st Dimension; problem remained with monitor.
Contacted Dell technical support at 800-456-3355, and requested firmware/patch referred to in forum bulletin: http://forums.us.dell.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=dim_monitor&message.id=33721 . Technician suggested modifying monitor power saving settings in control panel; and, that no patch or firmware was available for the monitor.
eMailed Dell technical support through link in message above, requesting patch/firmware, awaiting reply.
Noticed MaximumPC magazine has picked up on this issue; and, that PC Magazine has also been alerted.
eMailing: PCMag editorial department/Machrone/Dvorak/Howard; MaximumPC.

Whats more interesting is that it happens on the VGA connector, not the DVI connector for me.
I am using two different ATI Radeon's with the monitor.
The symptom specifically for me is the backlight shuts off and it does so very randomly. It took about a year for the problem to show itself too, which I found really odd.
When I first inquired about the problem (1.5 years ago), Dell sent me a canned response to turn off power savings in Windows. (Which didn't help) I found it interesting that they suggested a solution without diagnosing the problem. I think they must have known about this problem back then as well.
None-the-less I have had 3 2000FPs (under warranty) through here and they have all done the same thing.
Do I smell a class action law suit?

Hello,
I recently purchased a Dell 2001 Ultra sharp FP 20.1". I epxerience the same problem (permanent sleep mode) instead of waking up with a mouse move or a keyboard stroke. I am using a Voodoo 5500 (VGA connection). How can I correct the problem. I read an article on a computer magazine but it was mainly referring to DVI connections. I understand that Dell has a firmware upgrade (according tot he magazine) to fix this problem? How can I obtain it? I was on the phone with Dell for an hour and a half and they could not found anything on that subject... Thank you

Hi Jesse,
Thank you for sending the DVI file.
After working with the patch for a very long time I was able to get it to work.
I used two modified autoexec.bat files, and used the commands manually, in both DVI-D and DVI-sub modes, while pressing the monitor feature (not mode) button on the monitor.
Finally........ it worked.
I wrote 2 more detailed messages of the steps I took, but the system timed out. Should have used note pad and pasted them.... So this is the very abbreviated edition.

Dell-Jesse,
I read about this in Maximum PC magazine. Because it indicated that some monitors ran for months before permanent sleep mode, I disconnected my 2001FP from DVI and used the VGA output from my nVidia card instead.
Questions:
1) Is the FW patch preventative or only to be used when you get the problem?
2) How do you patch it? I mean, there's no serial cable on the monitor or whatever.
3) How prevalent is this problem? Is there a serial number I can check to see if my monitor is likely to have this issue?

msanto,
It is the video card that the file is used for. Only use the file when the problem appears. There are no serial numbers to check. It seems that it is a random issue.

OK, if the patch is for the video card, does it apply to all nVidia cards? Does it matter which one I have?
Can I get the patch so I have it on hand in case it happens?

You can fix this problem by disconnecting the usb cable from the monitor.
Try it. In my case, it worked.
