Will the U2412M work using an HDMI to DVI cable?

Hi,

I'm struggling to find a definitive answer to this question. I'm in the market for a new monitor and the Dell U2412M looks perfect for my needs.

I use a Compaq CQ61 Laptop at work which has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD4200 graphics card with HDMI and VGA outputs. I'm aware that VGA is inferior to digital connections so I'd like to connect the monitor using the HDMI output from my laptop via an HDMI > DVI cable to the DVI-D input of the monitor. I've come across some discussions online stating that HDMI is limited to 1920x1080 on most devices so I'm reluctant to buy the U2412M if I'm not going to get maximum performance. Other discussions state that it is all nonsense and the manufacturers don't know what they're talking about.

Will an HDMI to dual link DVI-D cable (like this http://www.ebuyer.com/130513-xenta-gold-plated-hdmi-to-dvi-d-dual-link-cable-black-2m-plex-034) connect the monitor to my laptops HDMI output and display the full 1920x1200 resolution?

For anyone who may be wondering this in the future, I have just received my U2412M along with a basic dual link (not sure if this is important but better to be safe than sorry) dvi to hdmi cable from amazon and my laptop instantly recognised the monitor at the full 1920x1200 resolution, despite the manufacturers spec for my graphics card stating that the hdmi output had a max resolution of 1080, so the rumours are true- the manufacturers specs can't be relied upon!

The screen is fantastic, thanks!

Hi remondo11,

Dell U2412M Monitor is 60.96 cm (24-inch) viewable area display (measured diagonally). 1920 x 1200 is the maximum resolution you can get on this monitor. Yes you will able to display full 1920x1200 resolution using the HDMI cable that you decided to purchase.

Thanks but I'm not sure you read or understood my question properly. I'm fully aware of the capabilities of the monitor, it's the outputs on my laptop that I'm worried about. My graphics card specs state that the maximum resolution output of the HDMI port is 1920x1080. Will an HDMI to dual link DVI cable allow me to use the extra 120pixels of the U2412M or will I only be able to use the monitor at 1920x1080 resolution because of this limitation? I haven't purchased anything yet, I'm asking before I buy.

remondo11,

We cannot know what a competitors laptop HDMI ports maximum resolution might be since we do not test on their stuff. If the laptop HDMI port is revision 1.4, it can go higher than 1920x1080. If it is HDMI revision 1.3 or older, it cannot.
