measurements of a 17 inch monitor

can anyone tell me what the screen size of a 17 inch flat screen monitor is?I just purchased what I thought was a 17 inch but it measures 15 inches.Is that right?

A 17' CRT Flat screen or otherwise will measure diagonally from between 15.65 to 16 inches on the viewable surface (V) depending on the make.  An LCD or Flat Panel 17" is 17".
