putting laptop display on Dell monitor

I have a U2410 monitor with an HP desktop computer. Also have a Lenovo T520 laptop. I want to connect the laptop to the monitor so I can view 24 inches instead of 15. I tried connecting the laptop to the monitor with a VGA cable, but nothing was detected. Tried Catalyst, but that didn't detect anything. Then tried a Display Port cable. Nothing detected. So how does one get a laptop display to appear on a Dell monitor? Desktop is Win 7. Laptop is Win 8.1.

* Turn the laptop off
* Turn the U2410 off
* Setup = Laptop VGA out --> VGA to VGA cable --> U2410 VGA in port
* Turn the laptop on
* Turn the U2410 on
* Press the U2410 3rd button from the top, "Input Source Select"
* Choose VGA
* Go into the Laptop video settings and enable extended mode
