AD Backup and Recovery without NMM Module

Hello

We do not have (no license for) the Networker Module for Microsoft Applications (NMM). This is the recommended method for backup and recovery of Active Directory. I have been looking for information on using the standard EMC Networker module/agent to backup and recover AD. The only information I can find refers to using the NMM to backup and recover. Does anyone have any information on the best way to proceed with backing up AD using the standard agent?

We have 4 x DCs - 2 are physical and 2 are virtual (VMware), all are Server 2008 r2

thanks

Steve

Admin guide should cover AD backups (at least it did in NW7). NMM will give you granular approach though.

We once had to run such restore when by mistake OU was removed   However, that was 2003 and we just did non-authorative restore as per instructions in document (there was appendix for it in NW7 admin guide).  Since then, I didn't really check how things are done in 2008 as AD folks are exporting their own stuff and this gets backed up (and we have snapshot of the virtual boxes which they believe should be enough for any kind of DR).

Hi! Yes I have looked at the guide Hrvoje and it gives me the information to backup but not much information on recovery! We have setup the AD recycle Bin in Server 2008 R2 so can recovery objects from this so we only have a requirement for a full recovery of AD really.

Hi Steve,

Please check Chapter 14 of Networker 8.0 Administration Guide.

You may find "Recovering the Windows system configuration", "Recovering special Windows databases", " Recovering with BMR", useful.

Dear Steve,

Please refer NPG. Select Disaster Recovery.

It gives good information about both Authorative and Non-Authorative Restore of AD.

HI,

thanks for the info, I used the NPG and it tells me how to perform the restore but not how to get to that position but I now know which save set to backup in order to perform the recovery so thanks for your help!
