Exchange 2003 & NMM 2.3 (Yes I know)

So I have been given the wonderful task of moving a Exchange 2003 server to our datacentre and start backing up using Networker.

Support issues aside, the basic question I have after playing with Networker for 3 days is ---->

When using Network Module for Microsoft Apps 2.3 and Exchange 2003 is it possible to restore to RSG???

I can backup fine and I can restore when overwritting the exisiting database but I cannot get restore to work with RSG.

The Admin guide makes me think that RSG is not supported, but a search of the forum shows people trying to do use Exchange 2003/NMM 2.3/RSG and I see no reference that its not supported.

Extract from Admin guide states that:

◆ Exchange Server 2007 — Exchange Server 2007 supports all the recovery options listed for Exchange Server 2003. In addition, Exchange Server 2007 provides support for:

     • Database recoveries to the Exchange RSG.

etc....

So as it says Exchange 2007 supports recovery to RSG I assume that Exchange 2003 does not.

Wondered if anybody remembers using NMM 2.3 with Exchange 2003 and if they could confirm that a restore to a RSG does not work.....

Hi simpsonak

No, you cannot do RSG with Exchange 2003, as RSG/RDB are functionalities introduced since Exchange 2007 onwards, this option was not available in Exchange 2003.

This RSG/RDB are Exchange capabilities that NMM adapted to, so as this was not available in Exchange 2003 you cannot do it, regardless of the NMM version you are using.

Please see below Exchange 2003 recovery options available:

NMM supports the following types of recovery:

For Exchange Server 2003:

• Roll-forward recovery — This kind of recovery can be performed when the

current log files are available. Roll-forward recovery allows granular selection

down to the individual mailbox database level, and the recovery is performed

on the last backup that was performed. No data is lost with this type of recovery.

Deleted e-mail is not recovered.

• Point-in-time recovery — This kind of recovery can be performed when log

files are lost. All new data created after the last backup is lost. Only the

transaction files that were part of the backup set are restored.

Deleted e-mail can be recovered.

• Rollback recovery — This kind of recovery is also known as destructive

recovery, because all changes that are made after the snapshot is created are

  • overwritten.

The whole snapshot must be selected for recovery. Storage groups within a

snapshot cannot be selected for recovery. A single storage group can be

recovered if the save set specifies only that storage group for backup.
