Lost Media Database and nsr/res after updating NSR Server

Hi All,

I just updated nse server from 8.0.1.1 to 8.0.3. Ths nsr server is also a NMC. After updating I am finding that all file in media databases are 0 kb and nothing  coming up in NMC. While updating I selected the option "Keep current database'. The procedure I performed was that first I uninstalled NMC, then NSR Server, then installed NSR Server and Client, then installed NMC. But the result has come undesirable. I have opened a SR for this for immediate help but till they get back I would like to knoe what are the things I could do.

All the device from NMC information has also gone away. There  are no devices in NMC to run mmrecov from. Please suggest.

First things first.  I'm confused by the part where you say you already have the pool.

Anyway, first - did you search across ALL your disks on backup server for nsr folder?  Perhaps you used different path before.

Second, you just need to create device (hopefully you know device name - in bootstrap you see only volume name).  What is important with DD devices is not so name of device as access path.  If you still have logs folder, you will trace it somewhere in rap.log or you will just recognized it from device wizard in NMC (assuming this is DD Boost).  Important is to create device, do not add it to pool and do not label it.

Then run mmrecov.  But if unsure or facing uncertainty, you better wait for support to do that over webex for you and then you are sure nothing else would break.

Do you have the bootstrap information ? All you have to do is to define the devices and run mmrecov.

But this is pretty strange that you lost the resdb and mm on upgrade.

Sent from mobile device please ignore typo

Prajith, there is nothing wrong with uninstall and install of new binaries.  If data was left where it was, indeed it is possible that previously it was at some other location.  In that case searching for nsr across all disks should reveal it.  However, any serious software would check that and if you select keep database it is expected to leave pointer in registry for new installation to use old path as well.  Now, I have no idea what happened here, but I assume OP did search for previous instance of installation (if not, then that would be first step).

You can recreate the device. But make sure at any point you don't label it.

Run scanner on the device (scanner -B )

Then run mmrecov command and provide the latest bootstrap saveset id, file and record number when prompted.

That should bring the server database back.

Do you have logs folder?  If so, check on which device last bootstrap went (usually it is recommended to have bootstrap backup before you update).  Then create that device in NMC only.  If this is tape device, mount tape manually from library and run mmrecov.  From there it should be easy (well, kind of since you still miss bootstrap information - not sure where that one goes on Windows, but it should be in some log or you might have it in email as majority do configure it).

Uninstalling and reinstalling is not a recommended way of NetWorker server update.

I would suggest you look where networker was installed earlier (location of nsr directory)?

See if you have installed NetWorker in the same location as it was installed previously.

About library and device, run inquire and see if it shows the device details on server. Incase if you see it, configure the devices.

Also find latest bootstrap saveset information(email) to get the res and mm back.

Dear Hrvjoe,

I had recorded the last bootstrap information before updating. It is below:

I have no devices visible in NMC, when I am going to create INDEXBKP, it says the operation will overwrite the existing pool, so I am afraid to create this.

I am using only DD, no tapes as backu target.

OS used is - 2008R2

The problem is older folders are overwritten, though I assure you I selected "Keep current database".

How can we go now? I am standing in deep trouble.

Hrvjoe said -" First things first.  I'm confused by the part where you say you already have the pool."

Answer - When I went to create devices, the deivces were showing with yellow exclamation mark saying in NMC device wizard 'devices seem to appear ther for this storage node....."

Hrvjoe- " Anyway, first - did you search across ALL your disks on backup server for nsr folder?  Perhaps you used different path before"

Answer - I am very sure on this we use E: \ Drive for installation on server, anyways nsr folder on any other disk is not a possibility , I am very sure it did not get created on any other disk.

Hi Prajith,

you said "Uninstalling and reinstalling is not a recommended way of NetWorker server update."

Sorry - but this is wrong. You simply confuse the users:

  1. NetWorker always uses this method - it just hides the process on a Windows server ;-) .

But on UNIX/Linux, you do not even have another chance.

  2. On Windows you must use this method as the version detection process does not even support the 4th digit.

So when you must update for example from NW 8.1.0.4 to 8.1.0.5 there is no other way.

I also vote that you most likely may have installed NetWorker, not NMC, in the wrong path.

So befory you fiddle around with recovering the bootstrap (easy, if you know how and if it is on a standalone device) i also suggest that you search all volumes for the previous nsr installation path.

Do not forget that you may not only have to look for "EMC NetWorker" but for "Legato ..." or other pathnames as well.

I meant to say without having good bootstrap backup in hand, its not recommended to directly upgrade the versions. Sorry missed to mention there.

Food luck.  It should be rather easy since you have bootstrap information, but I really wonder what really happened there. Certainly what you described is not how it should be by definition.

Well, if corruption happened today, did you tried older mmrecov?  I would tried them all one by one.
