Migrating data from Windows 2003 to Windows 2012

Dear Everyone,

I need to migrate some data from a Windows 2003 file server to another server that's having Windows 2012.

Data belonging to Windows 2003 machine is backed up, so I'll just do a directed recover to the new machine with Windows 2012.

My question is will the recovery inherit the user privileges & permissions I had on the old machine?

Thanks for your help.

I think it should, but if it doesn't then you can always use icalcs to pick up original and apply them on target.

Thanks Crvelin!

The problem is that the Windows admin is not familiar with icals (I think it’d be a tedious task) & it would be awesome if the directed recovery using NW & DD helped out here to peacefully migrate the files.

Anyways, I advised the admin to try with one directory & see how it comes up…

What kind of Windows admin is that?   Tell him to read Icacls

Anyway, icalcs is something to use if NW would not do that.  You can simply do a test.  Create some simple structure on source... set custom permissions and ownership, do backup and then do restore.  It should give you answer if you might have to do any post work or not.
