NMM 2.3 DAG Backup fails
Hello,
two years ago I configured the NMM 2.3 Build 49 to backup an Exchange 2010 DAG with 2 active and two passive databases. It worked perfect for almost two years.
6 weeks ago the first backup error appeared. It was not possible to make full-backups anymore. Because there was an other VSS backup before the database backup, I changed the backup time for the database backup and after this it worked again.
Another four weeks later the full-backup did not work again and so I checked again if there was an overlapping of the backup jobs and changed the start time again, but the full-backup still did not work. Here is the log of the first Mailbox-Server:

Torsten,
You are running the backups for the DAG or for the Nodes that are involved in it. Also, please provide the parameters under Application Information in the client properties.

Hi IPK,
I would not remove the NSR_EXCH2010_DAG xxx as otherwise that backup would be difficult to restore.
In DAG environment that variable is required as the indexes are saved for the DAG and NOT for the physical nodes.
Can you instead pleas try to remove the following variables?:
NSR_DATA_MOVER=xch-mbx1.ipk-gatersleben.de
NSR_EXCH_RETAIN_SNAPSHOTS=yes
Your snapshot policy only takes one snapshot and rolls it over to backup device, so no need to instruct to retain snapshots.
Also you are not using proxy host to mount the snapshot, so no need to specify the data mover.
Also, can you check the group properties, the "Advanced" tab, and make sure all the values on the right are set to "0"?
Make sure all the writers are OK:
vssadmin list writers
Also run the following command on the Exchange nodes:
vssclupdate
Then give it another try.

Hello,
after I removed NSR_EXCH2010_DAG=dag1.ipk-gatersleben.de backup started, made snapshots and began to write them to the media. After I read the answer from Carlos Rojas I interrupted the Backup, added the NSR_EXCH2010_DAG=dag1.ipk-gatersleben.de variable, removed
NSR_DATA_MOVER=xch-mbx1.ipk-gatersleben.de and NSR_EXCH_RETAIN_SNAPSHOTS=yes and checked the writers. All shown writers were stable and there were no errors. Ich checked the group ressource (like I did it several times before) but all values are set to "0". At the end I run the vssclupdate command and startet the backup.
In the result the backup ended after 1 minute again unsuccessful with the following log-entries:

Hi Carlos,
yes, for both clients directives are set, but it is the default directive "NT with compression".
We already checked the exchange system together with a supporter. We removed the passive database copies with their logs and made a reseed. All Databases are healthy but there are entries in the eventlog with Eventid 2137 and Source MSExchangeRepl. These errors shall vanish after a full-backup.
All names (dag and dag-nodes) are properly resolved by DNS.
Browse- and retention policies are only configured at client level but not at group level.

Can you please check if there if there is any directive set for the client?
Also there must be some change if the backup was working and now it's not. Maybe something in AD or DNR that could have impacted the Exchange environment?
Also, can you please check if there is any browse and/or retention policy set at group level?

Hi Torsten,
nsrsnap_vss_save main_handler received signal 9 means that it has received the order to stop/abort the process, so it's shutting down. Now, we have to find out what is instructing it to stop.
As the message points to BrCopyUnit, I would say to check the Replication manager logs, as well as nsrsnap.raw file.
Also please check the daemonr.raw log on the client to see if you are getting any error in there.

Does anybode know, what the entry "nsrsnap_vss_save main_handler received signal 9 entry " means and what the cause could be?

In the log-file C:\Program Files\Legato\nsr\rmagentps\logs\client2014_08_21_14_31_29_detail.log I found the following messages:

status event string "030255 ERROR:Trying to mount to a cluster node with older replica that does not have
sufficient information about the production cluster nodes." /*1*/

These messages appear at the same time as the signal 9 message.
Does it mean, that database and its corresponding database-copy are inconsistent?

Hello,
now I reconfigured the Networker Exchange Database Backup to backup all databases on only one node. For the second node the option "Scheduled Backup" is disabled now. The Backup worked properly and the log trucation seems to appear on both nodes too.
