windows 2008 cluster bare metal backup

Hi all,

I have to perform a bare-metal backup of a two nodes cluster. The o.s. is Win2008 and the Networker server is 8.0

For testing, I configured a group with only one node with save set 'All'.

The backup fails with this error:

88224:save: The base volume for the path is unavailable or offline.  Please ensure all volumes are online for backup operations.

88222:save: Could not add for backup.

VSS SYSTEM FILESET: ERROR: VSS failed to add components in pre save, writer=System Writer, error=0x80070002: The system cannot find the file specified.

90113:save: Unable to perform the DISASTER_RECOVERY backup: cannot add all the VSS SYSTEM STATE writers to the snapshot.

86024:save: Error occured while saving disaster recovery save sets.

arskra01clcp031.fiatauto.adfa.local:DISASTER_RECOVERY:\: retried 1 times.

The 'F:\' disk is a clustered disk, currently owned by the other physical node.

What is the best strategy to perform a bare-metal backup of a cluster environment?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Andrea,
I think you are falling into one of the known MS/VSS issues.
Please take a look at the following KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980794

Thank you
Carlos

It's typical registry mumbo jumbo... not sure if ignore thingy works fir DISASTER RECOVERY, but try to put under save operations following:

save -a '"ignore-all-missing-system-files=yes"'

Hi Hrvoje,

It doesn't work.

I have open a service request.

I will post the result here when I got answer.

For now, thanks

Fabian,

Have you tried both the backup command save -a ... and the MS KB I posted earlier?

Thank you,

Carlos

Carlos,

Yes, tried the save -a '"ignore-all-missing-system-files"' but does not change anything.

I tried to install the hotfix but it is not possible to install it on Windows 2008 R2 SP2, probably already included in another one or in the SP. The version of the Cryptsvc.dll is newer on my system so it should be included.

So I ma currently testing the fix but I ma not sure which syntax I have to use to exclude the shared disk. I tried specifying just E:\ but it did not work.

I have just restarted the server, I will see if it is better after a reboot...

Kind regardsn

Fabian

Carlos,

This KB is working without this hotfix in Windows 2008 R2 SP2.

I had to put the full path up to the exe in the ExcludedBinaryPaths to have it working.

Thank you,

Fabian
