Cisco 10G SFP in S5248F-ON

Hello, can I use Cisco 10G SFPs in our Dell S5248F-ON? We currently have two Cisco SFPs for the uplink in each switch, but we see a lot of output discard errors.

Ethernet 1/1/45:1 is up, line protocol is up
Port is part of Port-channel 2
Hardware is Eth, address is 0c:29:ef:e2:d6:ad
Current address is 0c:29:ef:e2:d6:ad
Pluggable media present, SFP+ type is SFP+ 10GBASE-SR

Hello, the sfps are from cisco not full dell. How do I get the exact name out?

447

Hello mathschut,

The SFP and the cable should have label on them. You could take picture and post.

Hello mathschut,

I did not see a Cisco, but I find this one we have for the S5248F-ON.

You may contact sales to purchase or ask them for other options.

Hello, I exchanged the sfps for original Dell sfps today. Unfortunately, I still have Output Discards errors. I still have ping crashes to the servers behind the switches. What else can I do?

388

Hello mathschut,

I'm sorry to see that.

Is this a new configuration or one that was working fine and now it does not?

Can you pull a support bundle, upload it here, https://upload.dell.com/ ,  under the service tag of the switch the Private Message me the service tag for me to retrieve it.

Hello mathschut,

Did the discards start incrementing after firmware upgrade to 10.5.3.4? Or after using Cisco SFP? When did the discards start?

How many ports are having discards?   Can the port be shut/no shut during low traffic to see if that will clear the discards?

Output discards are incremented when the egress buffers on a port are being used up, and when there is no buffer at certain moment a packet is dropped.  One scenario when we have seen this is if there are a lot of throttles coming from a port continuously, the switch will start buffering traffic and that will lead to discards when running out of buffers.

Try this:  run command “clear counters” and then collect “show tech-support” after 1-2 hours, to see what are the current increments (because counters are cumulative over time).
