Dell X1018P - Revert image-1 to active using CLI, after failed firmware update

Hi all,

Tried to update firmware to 3.0.1.9 using the admin GUI, but it failed and haven't been able to logon since despite factory reset.

Have noticed via CLI that the active image is firmware version 3.0.1.9 and the startup-config is also pointing to this:

------------------ show bootvar ------------------
Image Filename Version Date Status
----- --------- --------- --------------------- -----------
1 image-1 3.0.0.64 25-Feb-2015 09:05:11 Not active
2 image-2 3.0.1.9 12-Oct-2021 11:42:18 Active*

startup-config:

config-file-header

v3.0.1.9 / RASTUTE_800_021
CLI v1.0
set system mode L2
policy-based-vlans active

Is there any way I can switch back to select image-1 for the next boot using CLI?

Thanks for your help.

Hi,

Normally this asterisk "*" belongs to the not active image and it indicates that the image will be run on the next reboot. I haven't been able to find a way to change that from here at the moment. But can you try to restore your backup from here? https://dell.to/3faQcjI;

Thanks for the link, but those steps are for the admin console, which I cannot access since the failed firmware upgrade. I haven't been able to find equivalent CLI instructions.

FlashJ,

I am not sure that is an option due to being limited on what you can do on the  X Series switches. In your case, what I would recommend is that you either replace or factory reset then reinstall again.

Let me know if that resolves the issue.

Hi Chris, thanks for your reply. I have tried to factory reset, but the switch still loads the later software version and not the factory version, see below:

Hello, as the OP said "Tried to update firmware to 3.0.1.9 using the admin GUI, but it failed" if that's the case, we recoomeind use CLI mode. Hope the attached helps. I will leave here for the future reference.

NOTE: Not an IT pro but a competent user

I have just had the same issue as described above, but I am not able to even connect to TFTP as the MAC address keeps being blocked by SNMP when trying to connect.

Is there anyway to pull the file from the front facing USB port.. I could not see a way to identify this in the CLI although a USB drive can be detected when plugged in.  Alternatively, would anyone have an idea how to edit the config to allow access to the network device.

This is very frustrating as I was setting up a clean install and thought that it would be good practice to install the latest F/W version.

Many thanks in advance

Hi, in order to retrieve the running configuration file from a TFTP server or a USB flash drive, you’ll need to establish a connection between the switch and a computer or laptop using a serial cable. You’ll also need to utilize a terminal emulation software such as PuTTY or HyperTerminal.

please take a look page 91 Dell-Networking-X-Series-Switches-User-Guide

I have PuTTY running and connected and can see the scripts loading and telling me that a connecting machine via LAN is blocked by the SNMP.

What would be the syntax to allow me to copy from a USB flash drive connected to either switch itself or through the terminal?  I saw the code above to copy from TFTP but as I can't connect through the LAN this is not an option (I think).

Many thanks

This thread is draw my attention. In here it mentioned "pscp" command sftp - Transfer files to/from session I'm logged in with PuTTY - Stack Overflow

I found this article I know it's related N series but it is worth trying My USB Flash Drive will not work in a Dell Networking N Series Switch | Dell US Could you take a look at it?

Your USB may have a hidden security partition that is not recognized by the switch.  Depending on the manufacturer of the flash drive you may need to use different utilities to manage the drive partitions.

  • Format the flash drive to FAT-32
  • Delete all but a single primary partition
Options to format:
  • Windows Disk Management Utility  Format the flash to FAT-32 - Delete all but a single primary partition
  • Windows DiskPart.exe
  • Various third party tools available to remove and format partitions

USB File Management Command

Command Parameters
Dellswitch# show usb device Display USB flash device details
Dellswitch# dir usb Display USB device contents and memory statistics
Dellswitch# copy usb:// filename {backup-config | image| running-config | script filename| startup-config | filename  Copy the specified file from the USB flash device to the
specified file in internal flash.
Dellswitch# unmount usb Make the USB flash device inactive

@Dell-ErmanO Many thanks.. .this was actually easier with the USB drive for the X1018 switch

FYI: I prepared the USB drive with the version of the SW that worked previously, and then used

copy usb://filename.ros image

I was then able to reload and downgrade the SW version and can now access via the GUI
