Is it a backup config file on the switch or just a copy that you have?

i have copies of the startup and running config saved as a text file on a tftp server

In that case, copying and pasting the config from a terminal session would work, and then copy running config to startup but it might be easier just to make the changes between the configs, depending on how different they are.

You could also use the copy command, page 1101

Also thought I should mention the stacking setup. 1xg1 > 2xg1, 1xg2 > 3xg1, 2xg2 > 3xg2

Rebooting the entire stack resolved the issue.
