PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

Hi,

We've inherited some 8024F and need to update to the latest firmware, part of this is the: dev cpldUpdate command, which unfortunately fails:

console#dev cpldUpdate
Unrecognized device
CPLD update exited with a return code of 0
error_address 180511510, exit_code 6, format_version 2

value = -1 = 0xffffffff

We've tried 5.1.0.1, 5.1.1.7 and 5.1.2.3 and all give the same result, which leaves us with cpld v3, when the instructions state that we *must* upgrade to v6.  Any help is gratefully received as we'd like to get these updated and keep using them.

Thanks,

Karl

How are you connecting to the switch? The update should be done through a serial connection.

RE: PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

Hi,

Sorry I should have said, yes it's been done via the serial console.  The rest of the firmware update works fine, it's just the cpld that doesn't.  It's been rebooted, it's been hard power cycled and left for a minute but nothing makes it work :/

Output of cpldTest is (Ignore the PSU, it isn't plugged in):

I would try re-downloading the file to make sure it is not corrupt. Are you using a USB flash drive for the update? I so maybe try a different model flash drive.

Was anything ever found out about this error? I am having the exact same problem and I can't find anybody at Dell who can assist.

RE: PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

I don't have an answer as to why this happens. But some suggestions are to re-download the firmware. install through a serial connection. disconnect all other devices from the switch. Try multiple times, waiting a minimum of 10 minutes in between each attempt.

RE: PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

I too have 2 8024F switches that gives exactly the same error message when I attempt to perform the cpldUpdate after updating the firmware.

Has anyone solved this, please?

RE: PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

After the firmware update is done and the switch reboots, the switch may be functional but still completing some initialization processes. I have seen success in just letting the switch stay on for 10 minutes or so, letting it finish this initialization process, and then run # dev cpldUpdate. Please let me know if this does not work for you.

RE: PC8024F - cpldUpdate Fails - Unrecognized Device

Not sure if this will work on your model but is worth a shot.  On the newer switches (e.g. 8100) running 6.1.x.x software, the command is not "dev cpldUpdate" but rather "update cpld".  As mentioned previously, the firmware will need to be a the latest before running this command, since it contains the cpld code.
