Password Reset on 5012

I have been doing some searching on the net to figure out how to reset the password on this unit.

Basically following the instructions to hold the esc key during boot gives me the boot from flash/network option, booting from flash just gets me back to the password prompt, booting from network wants to load firmware.  I figured that loading firmware might wipe some of the settings (Hoping) and proceed to load the latest firmware which worked fine but I am still locked out.

Please help.

Thanks!

Hi MD12345,

To reset the password from the PowerConnect 5012 you can try entering the command prompt for emergency password reset or restore factory defaults and login with default username "root" and default password "switch"

1. Connect to the switch via the console port and manually reboot the switch
2. As soon as power is applied, press and hold the ESC key
3. At the command prompt, type “EmergencyPasswordReset” (case-sensitive without the quotation marks)
4. At the confirm (Y/N) prompt, type X
5. If done properly, you will receive a message stating that the password has been disabled
6. Type G and hit enter to reboot the switch

The switch will reboot with the password disabled.

For information about restore to factory defaults here the link to online manual for PC5012

Hi MD12345,

found a post where a user with the same issue like you describes, what he has done to get the command prompt.
Can you please try this one?

"My mistake was hitting escape *after* I applied power to the switch – you have to be very quick to catch it! It’s far easier to hold down escape in hyperterminal (or teraterm!) *before* you apply power and keep it down until you get the correct prompt."

Please let me know your results,

Thanks and Regards,

Rodger

As I stated orginaly that when I hold the esc key down I get the prompt of where I want to load from.

This is what happens when I boot holding the ESC key - This instance I pressed F to load from flash, If I try to type the "EmergencyPasswordReset" at that point as soon as I hit the n it starts the network boot to load firmware.

Thanks

Mike

,Thanks,

The problem ended up being that I had the terminal emulation in hyper terminal set to Auto instead of VT100 Seems like once enough text came down hyperterminal figured out that it was VT100 in time to change the boot mode, but not at the very start of power up.

Also, note that the X needs to be an uppercase X when prompted.

Rodger,

Does this procedure also apply to the Powerconnect 3548P? if not, do you know what action I need to take to reset the password on a 3548P

Thanks for your help.

Which passwords are you all trying to reset on the Powerconnect 3500's and the 6200? If it is the telnet/web interface password then the user account will need to be deleted and recreated through the console port on the back. If it's the enable password, Then one would need to access the boot menu on both switches to bypass the enable password.

Thanks for your response,  I have a Dell 6248 Powerconnect Switch in my network, but I dont have any credentials to Telent /Webinterface access to the switch. As you said, I need to delete user account by connect console. Can you please give me the steps of delete/create account and how to connect console also.

First we would need to connect to thje switch via the console port and use a VT100 Emulator (putty.exe, teraterm pro hyper term etc.) Then run the following commands to create a user account.

Console>en

Console#config

Console(config)#username password level 15

Console(config)#exit

Console#copy run start

This would create an account that can be used to access the web interface and or telnet into the management of the switch.

prommu123,

If your PCT6200 does not have a user account created and you are wanting to manage the switch through the web interface/telnet. We need to first create a user account, then assign the management vlan an ip address. Once this is done, Then we can access the switch through the management vlans ip address and login with the user account that was created. The below steps are assuming that the switch doesn’t have a user account and management ip address.

1. We would first need to connect to the DB9 console port on the back of the switch with the null modem cable that should have shipped with the switch.

2. We would then need to use a VT100 emulator (Hyper terminal Putty.exe, Tera Term Pro etc) using the following settings:

• Data Bits: 8

• Parity: None

• Stop Bits: 1

• Flow Control: None

3. This should now give us access to the switches CLI. Now we can configure the user account and management ip address.

• Console>en

Console#config

Console(config)#username admin password password level 15

Console(config)#ip address 192.168.2.1 /24

Console(config)#exit

Console#copy run start

The above commands would have created a user account with admin as the user name and password as the password. This would have also assigned ip address 192.168.2.1 to the management vlan which is vlan 1 by default. At this point, If you had a PC in a vlan 1 port (access mode in most cases) and that PC was in the 192.168.2.x network, That PC should be able to access the web interface and or telnet into the switch using the 192.168.2.1 address.

Thank you very much J S Whicker,

As I mentioned in my earlier conversation, user account is already there in my switch, but the password is missing. Just I want to recover/recreate the telnet and webinterface password.

For that, as you suggest, if I want to  connect console (Pl note, I dotnt have console password too), Does the switch work without password in console session? If yes, then I can manage surely. If No.... then...Please advice how to recover console passowrd...

I think the steps should be applicable when switches connted on stack also. Yes, My switches in cluster mode (stacked).

Thanks Mate...:)

Sorry, I some how missed that. If that is the case, then we just need to delete the current account and recreate it through the console port which may not have an enable password set( by default it does not).

Console>en

Console#config

Console(config)#no username admin       <---- This would remove the user account admin

Console(config(#username admin password password level 15    <---- THis would create user account admin with a password of password.
