PowerConnect 6224 Won't Boot
Hi,
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
This is for a PowerConnect 6248. I was trying to upgrade the firmware via TFTP from 2.0.0.12 to 3.0.0.8. During the upload process, a "chkdisk" error popped up with a message of "/DskVol//files/image1 too many clusters in file, adjusted." This resulted in a "Copy operation failed".
I thought reloading the switch could help, but something must have happened to the filesystem or something on this switch. The switch won't boot now! --> does not go to a boot prompt. Rather, it claims when starting that it "Can't mount volume". It then will prompt me for Vital Product Data, which i enter. Unfortunately, it then says "Could not open VPD file: vpd.bin" and following that "System halting..."
So, it never actually gives me a [boot] prompt. Rather, it tries to load the image, fails, and then attempts to recover. Now, I actually no the process well of restoring the filesystem, using XMODEM to get the firmware image, etc., but I don't know how to do that when I can't get the [boot] prompt. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to force it to skip trying to load anything and immediately go to the [boot] prompt?
Here is a snippet of everything it spits out when it tries to boot up:

Do you see this at the start of the boot process?
Boot Menu Version: xxxxxx
Select an option. If no selection in 10 seconds then operational code will start.
1 - Start operational code.
2 - Start Boot Menu.
Select (1, 2):
If so you can enter the boot menu by pressing the number 2 within 10 seconds.
Once in the boot menu you can try updating the firmware and bootcode thru Xmodem. That can be started by pressing number 4 when the boot menu is displayed. This whole process should only be performed when physically connected to the console port on the switch.
You can read about the different boot menu options starting on page 97 of the User Guide.
User Guide download: ftp.dell.com/.../powerconnect-6248_User%27s%20Guide2_en-us.pdf
If none of this is responding, it is possible that the switch has a hardware problem.

Hello,
this is the whole output from the console:
1 - Start operational code.
2 - Start Boot Menu.
Select (1, 2):

If the switch does not ever get to the Boot Menu, then we are looking at a hardware breakdown of the switch. At that point, you can look into the warranty options you have for the switch and or new purchase.
There are no recovery options if we cannot get to the Boot Menu.

Some additional things to check for possible recovery.
Are you sure you have the correct settings on you connection? Are you using a known good null modem cable? Do you have another available?
•Bits per second: 9600
•Data Bits: 8
•Parity: None
•Stop Bits: 1
•Flow Control: None
If that is not working you could try 115200 bits per second. This is the recommended speed when using Xmodem.
Do you have any idea how the switch got into this state? Were you updating the firmware possibly?

They are second hand and I guess they have hardware problems.
