S5000 SFP with SMF - protocol down

Hi,

Switch: Dell S5224-ON
Environment: Data Centre
Fibre: multiple 1Gb SMF links (1 metro connect; 2x Internet breakout)

Unable to get links working - auto negotiation is being used by the provider.

A DC tech came round with their tester and verified the signal from the DC. They then connected to the switch SFP module and there was no signal when using the recommended "negotiation auto" setting. When I turned "negotiation off" there was signal but we couldn't pass traffic (couldn't ping IPs on the same subnet and couldn't see any arp entries). You can see the output below

MANRPMI-SW-A(conf-if-eth1/1/2:1)# negotiation auto
MANRPMI-SW-A(conf-if-eth1/1/2:1)# <165>1 2021-09-17T23:21:46.550668+00:00 MANRPMI-SW-A dn_ifm 955 - -  Node.1-Unit.1:PRI [event], Dell EMC (OS10) %IFM_OSTATE_DN: Interface operational state is down :ethernet1/1/2:1
!
MANRPMI-SW-A# show interface ethernet 1/1/2:1
Ethernet 1/1/2:1 is up, line protocol is down
Description: Equinix Internet Feed
Hardware is Eth, address is 8c:47:be:c1:00:c3
    Current address is 8c:47:be:c1:00:c3
Pluggable media present, SFP type is SFP 1GBASE-LX
    Wavelength is 1310
Receive power reading is -5.991168 dBm

When I turn auto-neg off

MANRPMI-SW-A(config)# interface e1/1/2:1
MANRPMI-SW-A(conf-if-eth1/1/2:1)# negotiation off
MANRPMI-SW-A(conf-if-eth1/1/2:1)# <165>1 2021-09-17T23:24:27.854285+00:00 MANRPMI-SW-A dn_ifm 955 - -  Node.1-Unit.1:PRI [event], Dell EMC (OS10) %IFM_OSTATE_UP: Interface operational state is up :ethernet1/1/2:1
!
MANRPMI-SW-A(conf-if-eth1/1/2:1)# show interface ethernet 1/1/2:1
Ethernet 1/1/2:1 is up, line protocol is up
Description: Equinix Internet Feed
Hardware is Eth, address is 8c:47:be:c1:00:c3
    Current address is 8c:47:be:c1:00:c3

    Wavelength is 1310
Receive power reading is -5.989443 dBm

Line Speed 1000M, Auto-Negotiation off

But we can't pass traffic.

Config
interface ethernet1/1/2:1
 description "Equinix Internet Feed"
 no shutdown
 switchport access vlan 82
 negotiation off
 flowcontrol receive off

I have checked the port-group and the ports are in a 10Gb port group.

What could be causing this failure on multiple links? I have given this info to the DC NOC but haven't had a response yet. They just said to use auto-neg. Is there a secret Dell setting I'm missing? SFPs are sourced from Dell.

Just to close this off, the Dell switch wouldn't negotiate with the SP kit (not sure what it is. There is Juniper somewhere doing VRRP). Changed to hard set speed/duplex and it started working. Bit concerning that negotiation failed.

Module used is gp-sfp2-1y

Hi @wanatkinson,

We probably might need to check if the SFP is compatible with the switch. Do you happen to know when you purchase the module, do you have the Dell PN# that was provided in the order purchase?

Was this module working before?

What version is the OS running on the switch.

Hi,

Thanks for replying.

Both the switches and modules are brand new.

The switches are running OS10

Does PN# mean part number? The module is a gp-sfp2-1y. Is that what you mean?

Hi,

I gave a check on the model number you gave and some of the Dell PN# came up. Seems the SFP is compatible with the switch. That rules out the possibility of it being the root cause.

That leaves configuration of the switch and the end port. My suggestion is that, since the switch is new, you should call into support to check on the configuration. We are unable to go through your configuration here in the forum, so you may need support to help out.
