Stacking Modules

Hello, I am running 2 PowerConnect 6248's and require stacking modules.

Will Dell 10G Dual Port Stack Adapter, Stacking Module, UY108 work with the PC6248's?

How about the DELL 10G CX4 Fibre Stacking Module Dual Port  - GM765?

If not, what would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

When I configure a Dell 6224 on the Dell site and choose to add the checkbox "Stacking Module, 48Gbps, Includes 1m Stacking Cable [$300]", then the part that gets added to the shopping cart is called "Stacking Module, 48Gbps, Includes 1m Stacking Cable", with "Manufacturer Part# : K0644" and "Dell Part# : 320-5171"

UY108 is the stacking module part number.  This is the only module you can use for stacking on 62xx switches.

GM765 is a CX4 10G Ethernet uplink module.

Awesome thanks! One other thing, Dell specifies different stacking cables for each power connect switch, are all stacking cables built the same?

ie would Dell 8H431 work with th UY108?

Thanks

All stacking cables are not built the same.  8H431 will not work with the 62xx.

Each 62xx stacking module will come with a 1 meter CX4 cable for stacking.  You can order additional 3 meter stacking/CX4 cables if your application requires it.  The part number for the 3M stacking cable is G519F.

While you can't stack your switches with the gm765 you can link them with this module and cables.  This gets you away from only three meter max cable length.  I am running a 12 meter cable to one pair of switches.  You do have to give up ip addresses for each switches but I tend to do that anyway.  I haven't liked stacking since my early Cisco's.

Bhalsell, I am going to follow your advice and stack using the gm765 since I know my backbone bandwidth won't exceed 10Gbps. Question: Do you stack using both ports (i.e. two CX4 cables) or just one? If two, does that mean the backbone is really 20Gbps? Anything special to know for someone going into doing this for the first time?

This is information for anyone else googling for this info: see http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/shared-content~data-sheets~en/documents~expansion-modules-for-dell-powerconnect-switches-january2012.pdf

From the Whitepaper: Expansion Modules for Dell™ PowerConnect™ and Dell Force10 Switches:

PowerConnect 6224, 6224P, 6224F, 6248, and 6248P support the same expansion modules as the PowerConnect M6220 modular switch.
Both the Stacking module and 10GE CX4 module can be configured to either role (Ethernet or Stacking). By default, each module functions according to its module ID. Upon changing the role of a module, a reboot is required for the change to take effect.

The 62xx Series can stack using:

Stacking module UY108
Stacking module YY741
10GE CX4 module GM765
