Can no longer access the web over wi-fi.

I have a problem with a Vostro 360 touch-screen computer with 64bit Win7 professional, IE 9 and Live mail 2011 installed.

This normally conects to the router wirelessly for e-mail and internet, but suddenly stopped working correctly the other day.

It can still reach the google search page and make searches, but then can't follow any of the links of the results. Other web addresses don't connects at all, just an endlessly spinning of the timer that eventually returns a 'cannot display the webpage' error.

Windows live mail, (which is setup for IMAP), connects and downloads the message headers, but no longer downloads the body of the e-mails, and eventually times out with a non-response from the mail server error message.

However, other computers on the same router are not having any problems and are visible in the Vostro's File Explorer and shared files on those other computers can be seen and opened. Using the command prompt, pings to web addresses are resolved to an IP number and receive returns.

I connected the router directly with an ethernet cable and it worked fine, web and e-mail downloaded and displayed with no problem, but remove the cable and it's back to the above. I booted into safe mode with network and the exact same problems occured.

I've tried using the IE9 (No addon) version, i've disabled the Norton firewall and anti-virus, I've deleted the internet browser's temp files and history and reset the IE9 settings. Using the elevated command prompt, i've flushed the dns, and reset both the ip and winsock.

Is there anything else I can try?

Re: Can no longer access the web over wi-fi.

Hi Lurker57,

I will recommend you to uninstall and re install the latest wireless driver as the current installed driver may be corrupted:

  • Click on 'Start' and right click on 'Computer'.
  • Click on 'Manage' and click on 'Device Manager'.
  • Go to 'Network adapter' and right click on the wireless card driver and click on 'uninstall'.
  • Check the box to delete the software.
  • Restart your system and click on the below link:

http://dell.to/SdBzeL

  • Click on 'Download File' and select 'Single File Download'.
  • Click on 'Download Now'. Click on “Save” and save the driver on the desktop.
  • Once the driver is saved on the desktop, right click on it and click on 'Run as administrator'.
  • Install the driver following the on screen instructions.
  • Restart your system and check if the issue is fixed or not.

If the issue still persists, create a new user account and check.

Keep me posted. Please reply for any further questions.

Thanks and Regards,

Re: Can no longer access the web over wi-fi.

I notice that this driver is for Atheros Dell Wireless 1502. The network card reported on my Device Manager is 1702. Will this make a difference?

Re: Can no longer access the web over wi-fi.

Hi Lurker57,

Thank you for the quick reply. This system is shipped with either Dell Wireless 1502 or Dell Wireless 1702. Since you mentioned that your system has Dell Wireless 1702 card, please install the driver from the link: http://dell.to/Vv4W0r

Please reply in case you have any further questions.

Thanks and Regards,

No go, I'm afraid. I uninstalled and re-installed the 1702 wireless drivers, but had the same problem as before the re-start.

Tried creating a new admin level user account as well, but i'm getting the same thing with that account too.

Re: Can no longer access the web over wi-fi.

Lurker57,

If you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Start with the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

As far as I know, nothing changed on this computer before it decided to stop working correctly.
