Can't enter password on Dell Latitude D630

Jump to solution

Hi,
Just replaced the hard drive on granddaughter's Latitude, re-installed drivers and now can't enter anything but numbers for my wifi password.(It's numbers and alpha)

I've read some of the responses and posts on Intel ProSet as well as been searching google in hopes for an answer.I've created a profile, Tried all the different options WPAWEP, etc to no avail at this point. I am not sure if should try some of the suggestions since mine is older laptop and have heard there are issues with the password being a certain length, alpha or numerical in this laptop

The laptop connected fine before the hard drive change and adding drivers and wasn't a big issue.

I do notice when I hover over the little green circle next to my wireless connection it show "Network uses802.11 g and 802.11n"
Not sure if the above is because of the choice I tried in WEP that is shows what the network uses.

My own laptop uses mifi technology. If I knew what it is for the L501X XPS. could I use it on this older Latitude?

Help anyone, I sure appreciate it.

CindiF,

What is the operating system in on Latitude D630? 32-bit or 64-bit? Is this the Latitude D630 or the Latitude D630 ATG?

When you installed the drivers in the correct order, How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order , Did you install Dell QuickSet, v.8.3.17, A51?

What virus program and firewall are you using? Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here?

Installing My Wi-Fi Technology Intel® My WiFi Technology is supported only on the Windows 7 operating system with driver versions 13.1.1 to Intel drivers 14.3

If the operating system id before Windows 7, then My WiFi Technology will not install.

Replaced hard drive on Latitude D630. Connecting wirelessly

Jump to solution

Hello,

I just replaced the hard drive on a latitude D630. Added drivers and now unable to connect wirelessly as had before.

I am trying to use Intel PROSet Wifi Connection Utility to no avail.
Everything I have read has said being an older laptop I can't use this to connect due to not being able to add the numerical and Alpha password of 14 characters.

I also read somewhere to disable it and let windows do the connecting. I'm not sure how to do that if it's the way to go.
If there is another solution or another way, I sure could use some guidance.

Before replacing the hard drive it just was there to choose my wireless network and connect.

Thanks so much for help

CindiF,

If the operating system is XP, you MUST upgrade it to XP Service Pack 3 (XP SP3) in order to get WPA Security. Depends on which adapter you have, there are also some settings that may need changed.

Places to look to see if your Connection is enabled

Still need the ipconfig /all log to be able to help you. I also need the virus program and firewall you're using.

Please respond back to this thread, so all the information is in the same thread. I have a long day at work, tomorrow, so once you post the information, a Dell Employee or myself, will get back to your on how to correct the problem.

I will do my best to answer your questions today. I can tell you the lattitude has XP on it.
I will check on the other things you asked me and get back here.

Hello,
You asked which latitude I am working on. It is the Dell Latitude D630 and 32 bit.

I did install the drivers in order according to the list at the link you gave me.

I did install Dell QuickSet, v.8.3.17, A51. When I originally installed it I got an error message that the file was corrupt. The person on the other forum gave me a link to do it from another place so I did that & it worked.

I haven't reinstalled any firewall or anti-virus since unable to connect to internet at this point.

I'm using my external hard drive to get drivers and any info you may require.

ipconfig/all
Windows IP Configuration

        Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : stewart-b552a9d

        Primary Dns Suffix  . . . . . . . :

        Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcast

        IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

        WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No

Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

        Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1C-23-0A-97-C2

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:

        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-1B-77-21-3B-8C

In Bios it appears like wireless is enabled.
At least every option given is enabled for wireless.

I'm going to have a difficult time updating to XP Service Pack 3 (XP SP3) since I can't get the computer connected wireless to do so at this point. I doubt that is something I can do using my external hard drive but maybe I'm wrong. If I am then I'm open on how to do so.

You mentioned "If the operating system id before Windows 7, then My WiFi Technology will not install". Before replacing the hard drive my grand daughter had wireless. So somehow we had it on the Latitude. Sigh
My daughter originally bought the computer for my grand daughter but has fallen on me to do drivers, etc.

The wireless switch is in on position on side of computer.
The only option so far I have found to attempt to connect is via the Intel ProSet and to my knowledge it's not going to work on this laptop.  When I go to enter the wireless password, I can only have numbers so can't possibly put the password containing numbers and letters in.

In "Networking Connections" I seee everything under LAN or High Speed Internet is "Firewalled". Does that mean there is a windows firewall blocking them?

I hope I haven't overlooked any information you have asked for. If I have please let me know and how to proceed from here.
Thanks so much for your assistance.

Cindi,

Download these files and install them in the exact order. Download them on another computer and put the files on a flash drive or use the drivers disk that came with the system.

Dell Notebook System Software Utility

Intel Mobile Chipset Driver

Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Integrated Controller, 59XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller, v.XP/2k v10.26c Vista ...

Then download and install

Intel Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection, (R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, v.FLWSP0064D...

Dell QuickSet, v.8.3.17, A51

You should be able to get online, using the Ethernet connection. Go to Windows Updates click on custom and download and install the items listed, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications.

XP Service Pack 3 should be listed. This is needed for WPA Security. For WPA Security, it is recommended to use the 13 character password. The smaller password, tells me you may be using another type of security.

For XP WPA2 security, you'll need to download from Microsoft.

Hello,

sorry for delay to get to this. Have some issues with my own dell laptop.

Anyway, I have done Dell Notebook system Software Utility and Intel Mobile Chipset Driver. Both were on the computer already and asked me if I wanted to overide it being on there so I did and reinstalled.
When attempting to do the broadcom 57XX Gigabit Integrated controller after it unzips it tells me I'm about to remove it from the laptop which I don't think is what I should be doing. Obviously it was already on the laptop as well.
I will proceed ahead with next things you've listed.

Are these supposed to be separate files? Broadcom 57XX Gigabit Integrated Controller, 59XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller, v.XP/2k v10.26c Vista ...

It appears they are comma separated but all link to same driver.

thanks
