Cannot See the 5G wireless signal.

Hello All,

I have just purchased and installed a new NetGear Wireless router/ modem model# D6400.

This router uses a 2.4 GHz and a 5GHz channel. My Dell Inspiron 3543 connects well to the 2.4 GHz channel but cannot see the 5GHz channel. My work comp, also a Dell Latitude E6330 can see and connect to both channels.

Using Windows 8 and trend AV on the Inspirion and Win 7 on the Lat.

2 questions:

1. How do i configure my wireless card to see the 5GHz channel?

2. What are the advantages of connecting to the 5 vs the 2.4 channels or is it a moot point?

Thanks for your help with this issue.

The answer depends on the wifi card in your personal laptop.

You wi-fi card supports 802.11 b/g/n, not 802.11 ac.  The 802.11 ac is "5G."  you cannot access this faster speed and your laptop will not "see" it because of the limitations your wi-fi card.  However it is not difficult to upgrade your wi-fi card to one that will see the 5G signal and typically only cost about $30-50 (I just recently upgraded a Sony Vaio laptop for $35 with the exact same issue).  Just make sure Dell allows this so you don't void your warranty.

I used a Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 in the Vaio.

I'm faced with a similar situation with a Dell Inspiron 15 3543 laptop with a 802.11b/g/n wireless card along with a new router that supports 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n mixed and 5GHZ 802.11a/n/ac mixed (whatever "mixed" means). Given that both the wireless card and 5GHZ offer/support 802.11n, then shouldn't it be possible to get the 5GHz signal without a new wireless card? If so, then how? btw, I named both 2.4 and 5GHZ with the same SSID, which may not be the best idea. Thoughts are very much appreciated. Thanks, Stephen

Your Dell wireless 1704 802.11 b/g/n isn't able to connect to your 5ghz network is because this version of the Dell wireless adapter only supports the 2.4ghz 802.11n. Rip-off! Yes, your 802.11n capable router can produce a 2.4ghz or 5ghz networks but your Dell can only connect to the 2.4ghz network.
