Dell Wireless card connection speed wired 98 Mbit but wireless 12Mbit.

Jump to solution

Computer: Laptop Dell Studio 1555 Dual Core:  W 7 64 bit, router Sitecom WL-351. Max. connection 120 Mbit.  Speed normally approx 100 Mbit
on the Dell  desktops.  Connection speed on the Laptop Studio used to be 60 Mbit wireless . Haven’t checked speed for many week but yesterday found
out that the speed  dropped to 12 MB. Wired the laptop to the router, connection wend up to 98 Mbit.

Wireless again the speed dropped to 12 MBit.  Checked the wireless connection with another laptop and it went up again to 70 Mbit.
What could be wrong on the Studio 1555?

Cleaned the computer, no malware, Mode AP, Channel 11, WPA2

The card Broadcom driver 10-01-2008, version 5.30.21.0

The card works but the 12 Mbit should be at least 60 Mbit. Any suggestions, please?

Noticed that your driver is well out of date for a Win7 install...

Thanks for your suggestion. I  installed the driver The Del l wireless card changed into a Broadcom 802.11 g –network adapter, dated 18-8-2011 Version 5.100.196.81. Switched the Sitecom off, restarted the computer and connected  it to the router again. In properties the card shows a connection speed of 54 Mbps. But the speedtest shows a result of `13,5 Mbits/s. Hardly better than the previous tests with the old driver. Even switching off all the other computers, resetting modem and connecting again, didn’t improve the test. As said it used to be approx 60 Mbits. And on the simple Toshiba laptop we got 60 Mbit to. Any other suggestions I could try?

My conclusion after a weekend Google

When I bought the laptop Dell Studio 1555 I haven’t taken a close look at the Dell wireless mini card. I trusted that Dell would supply the laptop with the latest technology. Which they didn’t. This mini card is of an old slow 54g standard and it doesn’t make fast Internet connection possible. In theory  one should be able to connect wireless at a speed of 54 Mbit. But in practice the connection will be at a speed of 50% and even lower as shown on the Dell Studio  1555 with 15>20Mbit max. The Sitecom router W-351 is of the 300N standard and can provide a speed close to 100 Mbit. But the lousy mini card for the wireless connection in the Studio 1555  is of an old g standard and isn’t  built for high speeds.

Wonder if it will be possible to build in a faster Intel N standard in this computer.  Does someone has any suggestions?

The wireless mine card 1397 can’t handle higher speeds . Replacing that card with a Dell wireless card 1520 (11agn) WLAN, could that make higher speed  possible?

Yes, it would allow for upto 270Mbps connection if your wireless router also supports...

Got the Dell wireless WLAN card 1520 today.  Had some problems with the Dell driver software for 1500 series. Fortunately still had the Broadcom drivers 802.11 (agn) still on the machine. See previous response in this tread. After re-starting the computer with the 1520 card the driver software installed the 802.11N version automatically.  Connection to the router no problem, speed up from 12 MB to 50 MB. Which is 50% from the wired computers and acceptable. Most laptop computers wireless here perform  on that  level of 40-60 Mbps .  Replacing the 1397 card by the 1520 card in combination with the latest Broadcom driver solved the problem.
