Downloading XP Pro Drivers (particularly wireless) using other PC's
I need some help downloading the wireless driver for a Laptop. I reinstalled windows XP Pro on my Inspiron 9200 laptop. I don't have any of the original discs that came with it, so I'm just using a extra copy of windows xp pro I have ( using the original product key). Since I don't have the utilities disk, I have to download. I have 2 OS to download from, Vista and Ubuntu (Linus). Neither allows me to save the file to a Sandisk. Vista tries to install the file ... which I don't want to do. Linux saves it to the desktop but, when I transfer it to the XP platform, it shows up as an application file. Can I just rename it as an .exe and run it?

OOoooo! You sound like you know what you are talking about. Vista did not seem to offer me an opportunity to save. I did a search on R*.exe and came up with an R86360.exe. Now, is it safe to assume that this is in fact the wireless driver. Dell does not seem to provide the name of the file on the download page.
Additionally, if you don't mind my being a pain ... Know much about wireless drivers. I went to the Dell page using my service tag and 13 entries are listen under "Network" ... I know the one for Japan is n/a... but how do I know which one is the right one?

use vista and download file to standard location username > downloads (pay attention to where the file goes pathname ei c/user/download
go start menu > computer > hard drive (probably (C)) go to where you saved file
open second window (start menu > computer > sandisk open sandisk window
now left click file and hold button and drag file to sandisk window
it should copy there
if it is a standard dell driver it should start with R ei R12345.exe
just open sandisk on laptop and double left click on file and it should run and install
Good Luck
Let me know if this helps

LGF, you were very helpful and I want you to know how much I appreciate the help. Vista asks you to "Install" the driver but I didn't want to attempt that on a Toshiba with Vista. But, I tried it and then Vista did give me the opportunity to then 'save' the file to the desktop. I chose the file 2200BG ( 1 out of 13 options) because Linux allowed me to see that file on the Inspiron 2200 ( yes, I did apply a 'dual boot' on it. I transferred that file to XP an ran it. I now have wireless on the Inspiron and can go chasing the other drivers that are misssing. Signing of on Vista ... will sign back on from the Inspiron 2200 with XP Pro.
LGF, I have been fighting this problem for a month and only today decided to join the Dell Community Forum. I want to thank you again for your assistance.

OK if it is a dell it will have a service tag with a number on it (do not post that number here) go to dell support page and search by that number
it is unique to your computer with specific build info for your system
it should tell you what model wireless you have
download driver and follow procedure from previous post
Good Luck
Let me know how you made out

An additional thought. If you chose to use the Dell Download Manager on your Vista system, instead of just the browser download, that application would be what's trying to install - not the driver itself. Plus it may not let you choose where to save the file. Can't speak for what's going on with the Linux one.
If you want to clear out the Download Manager and start over, you'll need to remove the Dell Download Manager from Add/Remove (if it's listed), then clear your browser's cookies and temporary files to remove it as the default option for downloads - more FAQ's below. Then you should be able to go back to the page and use the second regular browser download option to get each file - don't try to add them to a list, just get them one at a time.

Since you just reinstalled Windows, there's an order to follow when reinstalling HERE - make sure you install the System Software and Chipset first to get all your devices recognized. After that the remaining driver order isn't that critical.

No prob
just reread post
I was tired and didnt realize you searched by tag already
there is another section on dell in support that just gives info on tags and i think that is more specific
also a program for XP and vista that is freeware and good is Everest Home Free edition
will tell you every little thing about your system
I run a dual boot xp pro and vista ultimate and it is a pain but rewarding
I am scared of Linux though!!! LOL
WIshing You the Best
