Inspiron 600m ethernet controller
after reinstalling XP Home and all the drivers, my ethernet controller driver is not being recognized. The chipset is in, audio, video, network (wired and wireless), and communication drivers have all been installed.......but the ethernet controller driver is not installing properly and therefore doesn't work. any thoughts? Checking the original system configuration using your service tag indicates that you probably have the Boadcom 440x integrated controller. The drivers for that are at:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_600M&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2966
If you ordered the Broadcom 570x Gigabit controller as an option (not indicated by the original system configuration, but possible), the drivers for that are at:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/type.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_600M&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=2967

See if the drivers obtained directly from Broadcom will install correctly:

Make sure that the network controller is enabled in the BIOS. If it is, does the ethernet adapter show up in Device Manager? If so, try removing it from Device Manager, rebooting, then reinstalling the driver.

Does Device Manager indicate problems with the device after your attempts to install the drivers? What happens if you try manually install the drivers through device manager and pointing to the driver installation file in the folder where the downloaded drivers were decompressed?

Yes, device manager does indicate problems with the device after I attempt to install the drivers....it states there is no driver for the device. I've tried to manual driver installation through device manager and I get the same issue. I think I've tried just about everything I can.........after I've exhausted all possibilities, what do I do next?

Hello,
I am having the exact same issue with my Ethernet connection after a Windows XP reinstall. I went thru the same steps as you with no luck. Dell claims that it is a software issue and not hardware related but I disagree. Have you had any resolution?
Thanks,
