Inspiron sees wifi connection, but wont connect - tried EVERYTHING

Dell Inspiron 1545 used to connect fine to Wireless - now doesn't.
It can detect the avialable wireless link, but not connect to it.
NOTHING has been changed prior top this happening.

The router itself is fine and other devices connect to it no problem.
The laptop connects with the ethernet cable plugged in fine.

I have tried the following to correct issue:

* Full Windows 7 re-install / Full Windows Update
* Re-install drivers from dell site.
* Reset router to factory settings
* IP Config renew / flush dns etc..etc...
* Laptop does not connect to other wifi
* Uninstalled antivirus / firewall etc...

Could it be a hardware fault????

Would really appriciate help - wasted about 4 hours on this.

I appreciate all of your help with this, but I think we've exhasuted all avenues...

I bought a new wifi card today for £1.20 and it works first time.

Cheers for all of your help anyway Rick!

I still cannot quite figure out what was up with the old card, and have been like a dog with a bone with it for three nights now - sometimes you've gotta let go and today I obtained a replacement £1.20 wifi card from ebay

Plugged it in and it works first time!

Thanks for your help anyway Rick, it is most appriciated

johncollinswork,

When you installed the operating system, did you install the Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Start with the Dell System Software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

After you install the drivers in the correct order, Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here.

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Hi Rick,

I have just updated Windows again and downloaded and installed all of the Dell drivers
(in the order suggested)

The wireless still does not connect.  Note that it used to work fine. I have since re-installed
Windows 7 (it didn't connect during the initial set-up stage either)

I am using Avast Anti-Virus and Windows Firewall.

Below is the system info as you requested.

Hope you can help!

I hae done exactly what you said, this time re-booting after each driver install.

I first uninstalled the existing wireless driver and deleted files
Then installed the Dell System Software Utility - wireless card was detected on reboot
I then installed each other file you listed, rebooting each time.

The problem persists.  The wireless IS enabled in that I can see
my connection (and many others) but after typing in the router password
it just states it cannot connect.

Note that I have tried resetting the router and have also tried
removing the security from the router. I have also tried with the firewall
and avast disabaled.  - Note that other devices I have (ipad / phone etc)
all connect to the router fine, and this laptop USED to.

Urgh!!

Any other ideas welcome!

johncollinswork,

You have the drivers for your adapter saved to your desktop.

Intel Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300, Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100, v.tic TRWFW0986D , A01

Make a system restore point.

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click on Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN, left click uninstall.

Tell it to remove the software and drivers.

Restart your computer.

When you login, the new hardware wizard will try to install the adapter, but fail. Install the drivers saved to your desktop.

Try to connect. What happens?

Rick

Hi, This might be too simple based on all the other comments, but my computer keept kicking me off my home wifi and then wouldn't let me reconnect.  I tried turning wifi off and then back on and then it lets me reconnect. Of course my problem of getting kicked off isn't solved with this though.

April 21st, 2014 23:00

The device installed as expected, but the same result - would not connect.

These are comments that I have made on a different forum about this issue:

  • Already updated BIOS and wifi is enabled.
  • BIOS diagnostic test reported no problems.
  • Same problem in safe mode.
  • I've repeatedly tried all of the cmd lines also.

A guy on that forum suggested looking at the card inside the laptop,
which I will do later today.  Failing that, I'll do another format and re-install of Windows7.

Wil let you know of any developments...

johncollinswork,

I'm sorry, I accidentally posted the Windows 7 64-bit drivers instead of the Window 7 32-bit drivers.

Download and install these in the correct order and see what happens.

Dell System Software Utility

Intel GM45 Express Chipset Family, v.9.1.1.1019, A03

Realtek RTS5158E Card Reader, v.6.1.7100.30087, A00

Then download and install...

Marvell 88E80XX 10/100 Ethernet Controller, v.11.10.5.3, A01

Intel Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300, Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100, v.tic TRWFW0986D, A01

and Dell QuickSet Application

Places to look to see if your Connection is enabled

Ok, another night of my life written off...

I tried everything again you have suggested.
The 5th link on the list (R246754) does not install (standard 'cannot install' error message when installing)

So, I looked for a 5100 driver on the Intel site and tried that, then installed your 6th
item on your list.

At some point during this the wifi kicked into life - reporting 'limited access' at
first, and then looked like it connected, for a few seconds, then dropped.

This at least proves technically there is still something that can work.

However, I could not replicate this 'spark of life' (after several repeat tries).

I then opted for another full windows re-install - same repeat of your links - 5th still fails.

I then tried using 'Driver Genius' to remove all of the drivers on the system and tried
again - at this point I am tring ever known driver and combination of un / re-install.

I am do doing windows update and seeing what happens.

Failing that, I am going to buy a new wireless card off the web

johncollinswork,

Download and save to your desktop...

Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software and Drivers for Windows 7*

Make a system restore point.

Start, control panel, device manager, right click on Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN, left click uninstall. Tell it to remove the software and drivers.

Restart your computer. When you login, the new hardware wizard will try to install the adapter, but fail. Install the drivers you saved to your desktop.

Try to connect.

If you cannot connect, make and model of your wireless router and the type of security you're using? What channel? Your router is NOT using Mac Address filtering, is it?

Rick

April 22nd, 2014 23:00

Sorry fella, but I had already tried that driver using the method suggested.
The router itself is using WPA2 Personal / AES - Auto Channel and is not using MAC filtering.
I have tried all of this without any security and it still wont connect, and besides, other devices I have DO connect.

I'm going to order the new card!

Thanks for all of your help, I'll check back on the forum a few more times in case you can think of anything else.

johncollinswork,

Try channel 11?

Try using WPA2-TKIP(Personal) or WPA2 Both?
