M60 & TrueMobile Internal 1300 802.11b+g WPA and Network Connection Issues
Hi Guys.
Have a Dell Precision M60 with TrueMobile 1300 Internal 802.11b+g. I have a Billion 7500g ADSL Modem/Router/Firewall/Switch/Wireless. It supports both WEP and WPA-PSK. I am running WinXP SP1 with all the patches, including WinXP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access Q815485. I am using MPCI Driver v3.40.69 A03 (76517rw.EXE).
I cannot establish a connection !!! I have the correct MAC address (I use MAC filtering), I have the correct SSID (I hide the SSID), and I have the correct WPA-PSK key which is renewed every 600sec. I have tried both the Dell supplied driver and the WinXP WPA driver. I had another laptop with an Orinoco PCMCIA Gold Wireless card with WPA and this worked fine with the 7500g router.
In addition, the netwok connection icons misbehave if I have the TrueMobile 1300 enabled. After start up, they do not recognise a change if the media is disconnected. Both wireless and the Broadcom UTP NIC. I prefer to use WPA. I have tried to use WEP, but my router only support WEP64bit and WEP128bit. The trueMobile 1300 seems to only support WEP40bit and WEP104bit - is this true ??? Can the true Mobile 1300m be configured for either WEP64bit or WEP128bit ?
I have tried the TrueMobile 1300 MPCI Driver v3.40.66 A02 (R74090rw.EXE) with no success. I have removed the WinXP Support Patch for Wi-Fi Protected Access Q815485 with the same problem.
When I disable wireless security, I can connect. But the network notification issue still occurrs. I have read another post whereby the 1400 sometimes drops out - I get this if I use no security. How can I lock in the 1300 into either 802.11 B or G ?
When I disable the TrueMobile 1300, the network notification icon works correctly for the Broadcom UTP NIC.
Can anyone make suggestions ? This is peeving me off !!!
Thanks

I have made two observations:
I hope this helps a little.
Cheers,

The 24-bit initialization vector cannot be specified - it's generated by the WEP firmware. So 40 and 64 bit, and 104 and 128 bit WEP are in fact the same thing.

Hi Guys.
I have subsequently discovered that WEP 40-Bit and 64-Bit are the same (same goes for 104-Bit and 128-Bit). I seem to have resolved my problem, but cannot pin down the exact reason why. I have Novell 4.9A client installed on my machine and due to other technical difficulties, I uninstalled it and installed Novel Client 4.8SP3. Sometime after this I decided to re-try the TrueMobile internal 1300 and I could connect. Seem to have issues using the Windows Wireless but using the Dell utility, it seems to work okay, including WPA/Pre-Shared TSK. Even disconnecting/connecting the UTP cable from the ethernet port would correctly be detected.
I am not sure that this was the problem, but regards networking, I had done not other changes (that I could recall). I spoke to a colleague who specialises in Novell in a coroporate sense and he beliebved that there was still some issues with the Novell Client 4.9A. I reviewed the Novell site, but found nothing associated with wireless.
Thanks for your replies.
