New Dell laptop says it is connected to the wireless network but It isn't.

My wife just bought a new Dell Intel Centrino. I can't seem to get it to connect properly to the wireless router/modem. It is a Netgear cg814wg v2.  The wireless status shows that the computer is connected to the internet. But yet the only thing I can seem to do is searches on Google. Any other site that I try to visit does not open. If I plug the laptop into the modem directly with a Ethernet cable it works flawlessly. So it seems that the laptop can communicate with other computers on the network, but I just don't have any internet. Or very limited internet. And I've tried this in both IE and Google Chrome.

I'm not a computer/wireless network genius, but I've spent hours trying to troubleshoot this issue with no success. I've reset the modem. Unplugged the modem. Typed config/all and all the other ones I found suggested online in the command prompt. Checked the settings on the modem itself and on the laptop. I Still can't seem to get it to work. I have 3 other computers in my house that all work just fine wireless. They are all older computers with XP on them.  I also found out that the wireless adapter in the laptop is a N 1030 adapter. But I don't know if that is compatible with my modem or not.

Well I became convinced that the problem was with the Netgear itself and I needed a newer model. I contacted Comcast whom supplies the modem for me and told them my situation. She basically told me that I needed to contact Dell Technical Support to see if the laptop was set up or equipped with what it needed to be used with my Netgear setup. Well, she said something that sounded a lot better than that. But that was the gist of it. But I really dislike talking on the phone, so I thought I would throw my problem out here first and see if anyone could help me before I suck it up and give Dell a call.

So if anyone out there would like to help me I would greatly appreciate it.

T8b4whatoktnx,

When you installed the Netgear router, did you set it up first?

Hit the Windows Key and the R keys at the same time. Type

systeminfo.txt

REMOVE THE PRODUCT ID and post the rest of the information back here. (Preferred)

or an ipconfig /all log and maybe it will reveal something.

Re: New Dell laptop says it is connected to the wireless network but It isn't.

T8b4whatoktnx,

Try reading...

Intel® WiFi Products — Power Save Polling (PSP) causes connection issues with some access points

I think this is the model that members have been disabling the bluetooth on the Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1030

Are you using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router, I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

You are NOT using Mac Address filtering, correct?

Re: New Dell laptop says it is connected to the wireless network but It isn't.

Hi Rick,

Sorry for the delay in response and thanks for the suggestions. I tried everything you suggested and it did not work. And no I am not using Mac Address Filtering. I ended up doing some more reading online and logged into my router and changed from WPA Encryption to unsecured to see if my laptop would get a connection then. And it did. So then I changed it to WEP. Set up the Router and the laptop to correspond. (Trying to learn all this as I go). And the laptop works now. But I don't understand why it would not work with WPA and it will with WEP. I know enough to know that the WEP is not as secure of a connection. So I'd prefer not to use it.  And I didn't even have an option to go to the WPA-2 I was reading about. So yeah I don't know. I know the laptop works for now. And my wife is happy. And I'm tired. haha

Re: New Dell laptop says it is connected to the wireless network but It isn't.

T8b4whatoktnx,

It's good your wife is happy! I have read where some members were turning off the bluetooth for a better connection using this adapter. NOT sure why you cannot connect with WPA-PSK(TKIP) Security (Personal) I use this all the time in my home.

Take care,

Rick
