PC wireless trouble

I have a old dell studio 1535 laptop (still running vista) and in the past month i have been unable to detect wireless networks altogether.

The only way it is able to connect to the internet is via ethernet cable.

Let me list what I have tried so far so we can cut down redundancy:

- I have used control panel to enable/disable the card itself.

- I have uninstalled/reinstalled the wireless card's drivers (after checking for updates)

- I have physically removed/reinserted the card

- I have tried using an external usb wireless card (still unable to detect any networks where there should be plenty to find)

- i have restarted/shut down/removed the battery several times

It may be an old POS, but it is what I'm working with and has several (currently) irreplaceable programs licensed my college days.

If anyone has suggestions I am all ears

thanks!

The fact that you are unable to detect any networks with the 3rd party USB wireless device, I would start looking at your anti-virus program. See if a new update came through or something.

Hi Thelonisti,

You may try connecting the computer to a different wireless network.

Check if the Wireless works in Safemode with networking. Restart the computer and tap F8 at Dell logo. Select Safemode with networking.

Check if Wireless is enabled in BIOS. Restart the computer and tap F2 at Dell logo. Under” Advanced” ensure Wireless is enabled.

Refer the following link for more troubleshooting to isolate the issue:

Hi Thelonisti,

Did you follow the above troubleshooting steps?

Let me know the status once you check in Safemode with Networking. Also, check if it’s enabled in BIOS.

Awaiting your response!

Rajesh I tried safemode w/ networking and still the same results.

also checked my BIOS to be sure the wireless was enabled, as it was.

I haven't had time to follow the steps in the link you provided but i will let you know as soon as i have done so.

thanks again!
