Taking a long time to "identify" a network

I have an Inspiron 1521 and while I can find and connect to a network easily and quickly; it takes 5 minutes or so for it to really work. My icon says it's "identifying the network". Is there anything I can do to speed up this process?

Thanks.

Re: Taking a long time to "identify" a network

Hi george1632,

Check the wireless connection in Safe mode with networking (restart the computer and tapping F8 on dell logo. Select Safemode with networking).

If the wireless shows the same behavior, update wireless drivers:

Also try updating the wireless drivers on the computer.

Uninstall and reinstall the wireless network drivers for the computer.

Uninstall:

Uninstall and reinstall the wireless drivers on the computer.

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Double–click the type of device that you want to uninstall.
  • Expand Network adapters from right pane Right–click the specific device you want to uninstall, and then click Uninstall.
  • In the Confirm Device Removal dialog box, click OK.

Do follow the steps below to check which network card you have in the machine:

  • Right click computer icon on the desktop.
  • Select Manage.
  • Select Device Manager from the right pane of the window that opens.
  • Expand Network adapters from right pane.
  • This will list the network card installed in the machine.

Let me know the wireless card model so that I can help you with the exact drivers.

Awaiting your response!

Thanks & Regards

RE: Taking a long time to "identify" a network

Under my network adapters I have three listings

Broadcom 440x10/100 integrated controller

Dell Wireless 1505 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini Card

Teredo tunneling pseudo interface

Is that what you're looking for? I tried updating the software but it didn't help.

Re: Taking a long time to "identify" a network

In case this might help others, If you are experiencing long network identifying times then try disabling the **"Register this connection's address in the DNS"** setting. And then disable and enable the network adapter to see if it's still slow ( no computer restart necessary ).

This worked for me when many other suggestions failed. Note: there are many causes to this issue.
