Unable to install latest Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 driver package R246753

Dell put out a notice that there is a driver update for the Intel WiFi Link 5100 and 5300 half mini-cards.  The update file is R246753.exe with version "tic TRWFW0986D , A01".

I'm able to download it and run the extraction just fine, but when setup.exe starts to run, I get the following error message:

Setup Error

This software package cannot be installed on your system.

The setup application will exit.

Anyone else seeing this or have a work-around?

I'm running this on a Studio XPS 16 1645 with an Intel WiFi Link 5300 on Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate (a wipe and clean install, not a factory OS install).

Same problem with my Studio 1557 with Intel WiFi Link 5300 on Windows 7 Professional 64-bit.  "This software package cannot be installed on your system."

If you can get online with the ethernet cable, then try...

I have the same problems. My computer is a Studio 1737 with windows7 64bit home premium. My adapter is a WiFi Link 5100 half mini-card.

The Dell-Service-Line is not very helpfull!!!

Thanks Reck. This worked for me!!

Also seems to have cured the BSOD whenever a nearby MACBook is turned on!!

I'm having blue screen of death windows 7 x64 after update with the suggestion Rick. someone else with him?

Windows 7 makes a system restore point every time the computer starts and also when you install some files. Try using system restore and go back to before the BSOD. After you restart your computer, try using Windows Updates to see if you need any drivers updated.

Thanks for your answer. Using the Debugging Tools for Windows was discovered that this update did R246753 and hand work. I wanted to know was if anyone else had the problem. Since I am now without update, using the previous driver that was very inefficient.

I'm having the same problem with a Studio 1745.  I went to Intel and manually installed their correct driver, but there's no telling if Dell customized their version.

Then again, maybe installation failure is the feature that Dell added.

 

Dell support sucks.  Notice how the tell you what good service they are going to supply just before they can't resolve your problem.  Maybe they think they can brainwash their customers into believing that their lousy service is actually good.

And if a service agent apologizes to me one more time....

it's a shame you have the same problem. I could only solve it by restoring the computer to factory settings. All I can say in this case for Dell is that the restoration system is very efficient.

I too received that message when trying to install Dell's driver package R246753 on my Studio 1745, I did as Rick said and went to Intel's site and let their chipset scan find the correct drivers and they installed without a hitch, didn't have to connect Ethernet cable or shutdown my wifi...  Thanks Rick

When you installed Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) did you install the desktop/notebook utility and the chipset drivers first? If not the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order If you cannot find Windows 7 drivers, then try using the Vista (or XP) 32-bit drivers, for Windows 7 32-bit of the Vista (or XP) 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit and install the drivers in the Compatibility mode

 

You should be able to get online, with the ethernet cable, then use the Intel® Driver Update Utility

I've tried that Driver update utility (installed the pop up to check for my drivers)  but it does not recognize anything from my computer,  I have an Alienware m15x

No Events found!
