Hopefully, people who have this problem in the future, you read this before you follow Ricky RockStars directions because he has mental problems. After seeing his answer here and then others and how wildly incorrect he is, I did some digging. I saw one of his posts on a forum from another website where he calls himself, "the puppet master" and he said he finds his answers on google. He says Dell is not his only place to throw out random answers to see if an stick. Apparently, he does this on 'yah** answers' and other forums, too. He's not a real expert, and instead of saying he doesn't know, he will just bark out random directions to try to troubleshoot non-problems or problems that can not even be fixed, as he did here. He just loves the power of people listening to him. He really has no clue what he is doing. He just googles your problem and tells you what he finds as if he knew it. The problem with the is that if you already did that, he will find the same wrong information you did or even worse information like he did here. I have seen many of his answers and about half are correct, 1/3 are wrong and just waste peoples time, and the other 1/6 are harmful. Look at what happened here. He should have just said what I say below but instead he had a back and forth for days because he loves the control.  Seriously, I don't understand how Dell lets this happen. He's all over their forums giving bad advice and using people as "puppets" in his weird game to control the actions of others.

Here is the real answer:

Dell Vostro 3550 does not support 5Ghz WiFi Network connections. There is nothing you can do to remedy this problem besides changing the hardware(going out and buying a 5Ghz USB adapter).

Jump to solution

Wilson Dias,

The 169.254 IP Address is usually a communication problem with the ISP modem/router communicating with the wireless router(if any). Power cycling the devices(see below) usually correct this.

First try, start, control panel, network and sharing center, change adapter settings, right click on your wireless connection, left click properties. Look for TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6 and click on properties for each. Have your settings match mine.

Also try resetting the winsock catalog

Start, all programs, accessories, right click on command prompt, left click run as administrator. Type

netsh winsock reset catalog

This will reset the winsock catalog

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

What happens?

Rick

Wilson Dias,

It was a little hard to read because Word Wrap was checked. Open notepad and uncheck word wrap.

A hidden network, not all devices will connect. Using tight security is better.

Can you run it again with Word wrap unchecked.

Wilson,

Try the system at a WiFi hotspot and see if it connects.

Try to connect with no security and see if you can connect. If yes, then with no security, hide the network and see if it connects.
