Windows 8.1 Latitude E6430 Wireless Issues

After a recent clean install of Windows 8.1 on my Latitude E6430, I can no longer access my work wireless network with utilizes 802.1x and Cisco wireless controllers.

This is using the RTM version of Windows 8.1. Windows 8 and the customer preview of 8.1 worked without any problems.

Windows installed the Broadcom 802.11n Network Adapter upon installation. When that didn't work, I updated the driver using the Dell support site and installed the Dell Wireless 1504 802.11b/g/n (2.4GHz) drivers.

Both drivers result in the same thing: I get connected with limited connectivity and usually a self-assigned IP.

The wireless works fine on home networks using WPA2.

Any ideas or troubleshooting suggestions?

Hi,

Thank you for your input “drgreghall”. Let’s see if this fix works for other users in the forum.

My machine is Dell M5010. It was originally having a Windows 7 64 Bit OS. I now upgraded it to 8.1. Will the same drivers as you mentioned work for my machine. I assume it would work if the wifi hardware is the same.

@ murlimohanrao, Before upgrading to Windows 8.1 did you check the Windows 8.1 Pre-Update Checklist? Please go through the checklist and confirm if your computer qualifies for Windows 8.1 upgrade.

There is a follow up to this guide, you can find it here (http://pureinfotech.com/2013/10/26/fix-surface-wi-fi-limited-connectivity-problem-windows-81/). This new instructions will give an additional 7 ways to try to fix the Windows 8.1 wifi connectivity problem in your Surface tablet, but it wouldn't hurt trying them on any Windows PC.

Thanks,

Just wanted to say thanks - this was a frustrating problem and I'm glad I found this post. I could not connect to my work Wi-Fi until I switched to this same driver (Broadcom 802.11n 5.100.245.200, I have a Latitude E6420). Thanks for the solution.

drgreghall, thanks for the research on this one. It was a big help. I was able to use the Broadcom 802.11n 5.100.245.200 (dated 3/14/2012) driver with my E6430. I can now connect to my work wireless network.

I appreciate everyone's contribution to this forum, however, this is a workaround for a bug in the current wireless drivers. In the end, hopefully Dell and/or Broadcom will release a stable driver that can support WPA2-Enterpise and PEAP authentication on Win 8.1. The Latitude line is a business laptop and needs to be able support more elaborate wireless configurations.

This actually looks like you need to update the software that runs on the Cisco side due to an interopability bug there due to a non-standard MFP implementation:

Nick,

Thanks for the links, but I do not think this is the issue. Our Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers are running the latest code release - 7.4.110.0. The articles above mention older releases of 7.0, 7.2, and 7.3.  I would assume the same fixes made it to 7.4.

HI All,

My Problem is resolved. Upgrading the BISO to version 13 and update the WiFi driver.
Make the change -
Under hadware configuration for Wifi controler - go to advance -
check for option BSS mode - change it to 801.11g Mode.

And it will work.

Thanks

Driver Broadcom 802.11n 5.100.245.200 (dated 3/14/2012) doesn't help with my issue.
I cannot connect to my "N Only" wireless network. I don't want to enable G because I found it lowers the overall throughput by a lot if I enable it for some of my other devices.

Me too, thanks for this. I could connect (2.4GHz) to my new Netgear R7000 Nighthawk router, but browsing the internet didn't work at all.

Backdating using the instructions above to Broadcom 802.11n 5.100.245.200 on my Latitude E6420 solved the problem.

However it is strange that Dell doesn't provide an updated driver to fix this from the start...

Thank you!!!

Hi,

Thank you very much for you help.

I was facing some problems with my  Dell/Broadcom 1504b/g/n after upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. After that for many times my wireless connection was leaking in limited state.

I tried several tips but the only that solved my problem was this one:

- Rollback the wireless driver for the below version:

The specific driver that worked for my Dell Latitude E6430 was the Broadcom 802.11n 5.100.245.200 (dated 3/14/2012).

Thanks for posting the driver answer. This answer just worked for my Dell Inspiron 20 running windows 8.1. Of course, I didn't use the same driver. I have a Realtek PCIe Family Controller and I changed to the Microsoft version of the driver.

Thanks again.
